Description: This is our most popular woodworking class and for good reason, besides covering all the basic skills necessary to successfully build a finely designed cabinet, students are often surprised to discover how much emphasis is placed on accuracy and the knowledge presented which specifically addresses the construction techniques involved when utilizing “natural wood” in cabinet making. Wood movement, milling and planning will be discussed together with the use of various milling tools. Man made products, advantages and disadvantages of their use, are discussed in a review of the anatomy of a commercial cabinet. Hardware options are also considered. Each student will construct a wall cabinet with a flat panel, inset door and a drawer using dado and rabbet joints. This is a two-day course and it fills quickly!

Introduction to Wood Turning, Lathe and Tools

Tools Required: Students are welcome to bring any (2 to 3 max.) turning tools from home to practice sharpening on.
Description: This one day course is designed to get you familiar with all the basics involving the lathe and traditional turning tools. Tommy Joe will show students how to affix wood to the lathe using drive spurs and live centers, faceplate and the 4 Jaw Chuck. Students will sharpen a variety of basic tools using a slow speed grinder and the "Wolverine" sharpening guide system. Before class is over students will get the opportunity to turn a simple shape which they can take home. Students will be required to bring or purchase a ANSI rated woodturning face shield for safety. Face Shields will be available for purchase at a discounted price on day of class. Students will be given a 45 minute break for lunch (lunches may be brought to class from home). All students are encouraged to bring a notebook and writing materials in order to take notes (a general syllabus will be provided to each student).
