CNC 201: A Maker's Foundation

Part 1: Saturday, November 1, 2025, 9 AM - 5 PM

Part 2: Sunday, November 2, 2025, 9 AM - 5 PM

This core CNC class begins with a quick review of CNC / VCarve basics, but quickly launches into new concepts, including using & modifying 2D clipart, bitmap tracing & clean up, offsets and arrays. Students will also learn how to create original drawings combining open and closed vectors then modifying them using node editing. Students will setup several new tool definitions crucial for more common CNC applications. New 2.5D toolpaths include: drilling, texturing, prism, and fluting. A portion of class time will be reserved for actual CNC machining. Projects will include coasters, cutting boards, a simple game and … if time permits … a candle holder. Student’s own Windows based laptop with Vectric Vcarve or Aspire installed and operational (Desktop, Pro or Aspire; the free demo version is OK), a scrolling mouse and a USB 2.0 flash drive (16 MB max). Please Note: This foundation course is required for future CNC classes.

Intro to Marquetry and Inlay

Marquetry is an art form of woodworking that has been around for centuries. It involves cutting thin veneers by hand which are later inlayed into a woodworking piece of furniture parts. Marquetry is as the French called it, "Painting with wood". This class teaches the fundamental aspects of doing marquetry for your own projects. This course covers resawing veneers, creating patera packets, hand cutting techniques, sand shading, glue ups, and demonstrating inlaying your marquetry piece into wood.

CNC 100: Introduction to CNC Machines

Learn the lingo and process to begin your studies in all things CNC / Vectric (VCarve Desktop, VCarve Pro & Aspire). HARDWARE OVERVIEW: machine anatomy / specs, accessories, and tooling. SOFTWARE OVERVIEW: VCarve Desktop, VCarve Pro & Aspire. FULL DEMO: Instructor will demo full CNC process … from design to machining. NOTE: No PC or software required. RECOMMENDED READING: "CNC Router Essentials" or “Beginner’s Guide to CNC Machining in Wood”
