Choosing the Right Lathe

A lathe is an important tool for shaping wood. It allows you to turn wood into many objects, like bowls, spindles, or decorative pieces. It functions by holding the wood securely in place while it rotates at high speeds, allowing you to carve and shape it with specialized tools.

As you shop, consider the size of the projects you'll be working on, your available workspace, and your budget. We carry popular brands like Powermatic Rikon and Laguna. People recognize these manufacturers for their quality, longevity and reliability.

Types of Wood Lathes

Woodcraft has a variety of lathes. We offer small models for tight spaces, mid-sized models and larger, professional models for complex projects.

Mini Lathe: For those with limited space, a mini wood lathe can be an excellent choice. Typically featuring a swing capacity of 8 to 12 inches. They are ideal for crafting small objects such as pens, toys, or petite bowls.

Midi Lathe: A midi wood lathe spans the gap between mini and full-size machines. They have a swing of 12–16 inches.

They are versatile, catering to both beginners and more experienced woodworkers. They can handle medium-sized pieces. They often have features that improve control and stability while turning.

Full-size Lathe: Full-size lathes, sometimes referred to as a stationary lathe, can handle projects that are larger than 16 inches. They are great for making furniture legs, big bowls and other large items. These lathes typically offer more power and advanced features, including variable speed settings and more extensive tool rest options.
