Intro to CNC - Make A Custom Sign

Create a personalized wooden sign while learning the fundamentals of CNC routing! In this hands-on introductory class, students will learn the basics of operating a NextWave CNC machine and designing projects using VCarve software. Participants will explore toolpaths, material setup, machine safety, and carving techniques as they create a custom sign to take home. Perfect for beginners with little to no CNC experience, this class provides a fun and practical introduction to digital woodworking and CNC design.

Date Night: Create Custom Groutless Mosaics

For all "Date Night" classes, the tuition includes up to two people making the same project. Looking for a unique and creative date night experience? In this hands-on class, there will be a scroll saw for each person to use. You'll work next to your partner and each make your own mosaic. The instructor will have paper patterns of popular simple silhouettes such as a heart, crescent moon or star and Mongrams (All the capital letters of the alphabet) each person will select one silhouette or letter and be shown how to temporarily attach it to the wood. Students will then use the scroll saw to cut the wood to the shape of the silhouette. Then instructor will demonstrate how to apply precut colorful mosaic glass shapes to the wood. The instructor will demonstrate how to cut the glass so it won't overhang the edges of the wood. You'll have time to create your own groutless mosaic that allows the beauty of the wood to show behind the colorful glass. We'll attach a hook to the back so you can take your mosaic home and display it on your wall. No prior experience is needed. Just bring your creativity, and we’ll provide the rest!

Let Tim Gilman, with more than a decade of scroll saw experience designing patterns, writing articles & reviews for Scroll Saw Woodworking & Crafts Magazine (www.scrollsawer.com), help you start scrolling or improve your scrolling. This introductory hands on class will begin with an overview of how the scroll saw functions & the variety of projects you can complete with a scroll saw. Students will be shown the different types of blades & learn when they should be used. Students will be shown how to attach patterns & practice attaching patterns. Tim will guide students through the beginning lessons of Fox Chapel Publishing's Scroll Saw Workbook, the same lessons that Tim followed to learn the scroll saw many years ago! At the end of the class you'll have the option to purchase this book. The lessons in this book build your skill as you make cuts to create scrollwork that you can take home! Our classroom has enough scroll saws to ensure there will be a dedicated scroll for each student to use during the class to maximize their time practicing scrolling. With a class size limited to 5 students you'll get direct instruction & all your questions answered! You'll learn lots of tips & tricks such as squaring the blade, proper blade tension, hand placement & speed selection. After taking this class, watch the class schedule for more opportunities to improve your scrolling with intermediate scroll saw classes such as: Puzzle Making, Basket Making, Intarsia & Compound Cutting Magic Wands, Chess Pieces & More!
