Worth the cost
There are some things you should know before buying this set. First of all, while it's HSS, don't use them on any high speed tool. They're just too short, and you endanger yourself. Secondly, that they need sharpening means they truly need sharpening, not just that this will improve them. The parting tool in particular is about as sharp as a screwdriver and needed both filing and sharpening. I would also recommend not using the 1/8" tools except on soft woods. The parting tool will go hot and burn the wood as it can't lead the heat away, and the spindle gauge is thin all the way and will both go hot and flex significantly, even if the toolrest is right up to the wood. Those caveats taken into account, it's a good set for the price, and can be a good starter set for "light" work like bottle stops and pens. Add a roughing gouge, which this set lacks, and it's a great start. But if you want to turn an ebony or cocobolo bowl, these are not the tools you are looking for.

just what I wanted with my Mini Lathe
I cannot comment on how these knives work as I have yet to actually use on the new lathe, but they are the ones I have been looking for and believe they will do the trick.
-
Mini Tools a great fit for a Mini Lathe
Good variety of tools for a beginner at turning.

Great chisels in a tiny package
These tiny tools are perfect for working in tight spots. After tweaking the bevel on the gouge for personal preference, it's one of the most used tools in my shop. I even have the same gouge in the full length version & it doesn't get pulled out too often anymore. I wouldn't recommend these as a beginners set, or especially not as a primary set, but for finishing/detail work, these are a great addition to any turning shop.

Great For A New Hobbiest.
As a weekend hobbiest it was a no brainer to pick these up on the current (April 2013) sale. Gave them a try today and had a great time. They worked well and easily. Im rather small and dont have the body weight or muscle to put behind these yet I could work a piece of zebrawood easily. Cant speak to durrability as they only recieved about an hour and a half of use thus far. If you are a begginer this is a nice starter set. Attached are two photos of a zebrawood hairstick made with this set after removing from the lathe and sanded to 1000, oiled and unfinished.

Great for small, delicate, detail work
Perfect size for those "mini" projects.
-
good for details
I ground a fingernail profile on the gouge and its one of my favorites. Easy and quick to sharpen and can do the inside of a small bowl. I use the skew for getting the angle right on the foot of bowls, held at a slight angle to the tool rest. The parting tool is good for small stuff a few inch diameter. This set was great for getting familiar with wood turning tools, and not so intimidating as the bigger tools.

Very very nice
My son uses these for making duck calls

Great Bargain!
This was my first turning set. It was great for practicing starting out (turned a lot of dowels). Also use it with pen kits. A couple have broken but I was overdoing it. For the price I would buy another set if needed.

A great value
A very nice set for smaller work. You can pay more, but why?
-
Nice, but not so nice
I really liked these knives when they arrived. They were a bit smaller than I expected, and quality was an issue, but they work great. Pros. price, size, Cons. HSS, very versatile, Uses. small projects, tight spaces
-
Perfect
I got these tools because I turn game calls and they are so nice for doing nice details and edges! I had been just using my larger tools and getting away with it but these are super nice for tight spots and curves on pieces. I wouldn't turn a whole piece with them but for the price they are well worth it!

Work well
The small gouge is really small, I dont know what you would ever use it for. The parting tool is sweet, very handy. This set isn't for large projects, but thats not what I got them for either.

Good for small turnings
Good tools for turning small projects on the lathe.

You Get What You Pay For......
Sigh...I bought it in late Feb 2012, for [$] plus tax. It's currently on sale for [$]. For the [$] price it was a gamble. Unfortunately for me the parting tool made a clean break right in the middle of the length of metal blade, while i was using it. The break was no where near my tool rest marks and i was only trying to remove the tail end of some birds eye maple on a screwdriver handle that was about 1/4in wide and 1/2in deep. I could not see any obvious poruos holes in the metal and i could not see any fractures/cracks. It was just a clean break. I'm lucky the tool piece flew down to my table and not up into my face. I just brought my set to local Woodcraft and they replaced it under warranty. It would be worth the [$] price but not [$] The good is the variety of tools in the kit and they really are sharp and ready for use out of the box. The bad is poor quality and they are small tools---more useful for ornament and pen turning.

Great set for the price!!
I have compared these tools to top of the line brands and can find no difference. The only difference i did find was tha these tools are half to a quarter of the price. Tools are made of high quality materials and are ready to use out of the box. I would recommend them to anybody. Extremely, satisfied!

Great tools for the price
I habe compared this tool set to the leading brands and can find no differences except they are a fraction of the cost. Tools are sharp out of the box. Great set for anybody...professional or beginner. I highly recommend these tools... Very satisfied.

Great Deal!
My wife is using this set for pens now but more later. Nice look and feel, small gouge is a little scary, due to smallness, but works so far.
-
Very small set
This set is very small and I want a little larger set. The copy was miss leading to me. It may just me. I don't think these will hold up very long.
-
excellent!
Very nice for wood turners. Good quality and affordable.
-
Fantastic Value
This set offers a lot of tooling for the money! The construction is all that you need for the chisels intended use.I would certainly purchase this product again if needed and will recommend it to friends in need of turning tools for small items.
-
sorry I wated so long to buy a set
If you own a small mini lath the tool set will give you many many hours of turning small items. I am very glad to have my set. I have not had them long but have made wheels, lights, some old lanterns out of dowels for early vintage cars and trucks, and I made some fire hose nozzles for a fire truck, they turned out great I could not make them with my larger turning tools

Great set.
Great for the small jobs. Best buy for the buck. Good set of turning tools.
-
Exactly what I needed for small turnings
A much needed to my selection of wood turning tools.
-
Good buy
Great on small delicate turnings
-
Will definately purchase again,
I am not into buying inexpensive tools and was a little questional. I purchased a set for my personal use and was impressed with the edge holding ability.I have used the set for a year and still have flute left. I puchased 10 sets for the Exploritas classes I teach and find the tools a good value, especially when novice students sharpen thier , my tools. The 1/8" gouge is to small but the handle can be used for another tool

Not Quite as Shown
The picture on-line shows these to be the Pinnacle brand, however what arrived are from Wood River. The on-line description does not list a brand name. My impression is that Pinnacle is Woodcraft's higher end line while Wood River is mid-grade. That confusion aside, the tools appear to be well made. I particularly like that the brass bands holding the blades in are actually thick brass banding rather than the thin brass caps use on some import tools. As advertised, these do need honing before use. I haven't honed or used them yet, so I can't comment on the quality of the steel.
-
Brilliant!
Perfect for use with my 4x10 mini-lathe. Also very handsome tools in a nice storage case.
-
good starter set for midi lathe
Nice starter set for small projects on my Jet 1014 VS lathe. I've used it for turning pens for almost 2 years now. The one chisel in it that's pretty much useless is the small gouge. Its so small I cant see it good enough to sharpen it. You need one of those magnifying/light on a movable arm things to be able to use it and sharpen it. The other chisels keep an edge pretty good and dont need sharpened too often. They could be a little bit longer in the handle to make them easier to control.

Great tool for small projects
