Woodcarving Intro

with Erich Zarnfaller

In this class, Erich will introduce students to basic carving tools, such as gouges, etc. In addition he will cover wood grain considerations, tool sharpening and cutting techniques. Students will first be taught how to carve a circular shape to that will teach them about carving in the correct wood grain direction. In addition, students will do some high relief carving that will include undercutting. If you've already started a project at home, bring it along to work on it in class also. Students must provide their own carving tools that are itemized in the tool list. These can be ordered if necessary.

Cabinet Scrapers - Use and Care

The cabinet card scraper is one of the most powerful but least understood hand tools. If sharpened and used properly, it can create a wood surface finish far superior to using abrasives and power sanders. In this hands-on class, students will learn the proper sharpening methods and techniques necessary to achieve a consistent sharp edge and results. Mickey will also introduce curved edge scrapers and how you can make your own from discarded tool steel. Learning how to use the basic cabinet scraper will immediately elevate your skill and abilities in fine woodworking.

Introduction to Bowl Turning

with Joe Centorino

Saturday, December 13, 2025, 9:30 AM - 4 PM

This class is intended for beginners and for those who wish to brush up on their bowl turning skills. Joe will begin by a review of safety precautions followed by a discussion and demonstration of the turning tools needed along with methods and proper sharpening techniques. Students will also learn about wood selection and grain orientation and the use of face plates and chucks. Under close supervision, students will be assigned to their own lathe where they will learn to turn one or two small bowls by the end of class. There is an additional materials fee of $25.

Wooden Toy Truck Build for "Toys-for-Tots"

Saturday, December 6, 2025, 9:30 AM - 3 PM

Volunteers Needed!! Woodcraft has planned a wooden toy truck-build event on Saturday, December 6, 2025, starting at 9:30am and through out the day for the benefit of the Toys-for-Tots program. Customers are encouraged to stop by the store and spend a short while assisting our "elves" assemble the toy trucks. This is a charitable event which will surely put you in the spirit of the season by giving a little of your time and effort to help needy children during the holidays. Woodcraft will be providing all tools and materials along with snacks, and other refreshments to feed the hungry participants. Mark the date on your calendar and come join us to help make the event a success.
