Hand Tool Basics & Sharpening

with Howard Hale

HANDS-ON. Chisels, scrapers, planes and saws are the most fundamental woodworking tools in the shop. Howard will provide hands-on instruction on how to sharpen, adjust and use each of these great tools. Students will practice "old world" basic exercises with each tool. Tool #1: Learn basic chisel techniques and how to cut a mortise for a hinge faster than any machine takes to set up. Tool #2: Learn how to use a cabinet scraper as a step toward applying a fine finish. Tool #3: Learn how great using a hand plane can be. Plane an edge straight, flatten a board and cut chamfers with ease. Tool #4: Sharpen and reset your dovetail saw so it cuts perfectly. Learn simple exercises that will give you great confidence with your saw. This is a wonderful hands-on class that anyone interested in hand tools will enjoy. Bring your own tools or buy new ones and leave this class knowing how to correctly use them on your next project. Please bring your own tools: 3/8" or 1/2" Chisel, Cabinet Scraper (Card Scraper), Hand Plane (#3 or #4 or #5) or any type of Block Plane and a Dovetail type Saw. NOTE: THIS IS NOT A RESTORATION CLASS. Tools Need To Be In Working Order. Please No Old Or Rusted Hand Tools That Could Need A Lot Of Work. HANDS-ON. OUR MOST POPULAR CLASS!! ADULTS ONLY - NO YOUTH - 18 YEARS AND OLDER. This foundation course introduces you to the wonderful world of woodworking. You will learn how to set alignment and use the chop saw, table saw, jointer, planner, band saw, router table and a stationary sander. Safety will be emphasized with each machine. Each student will complete a hands-on project using basic joinery techniques. Types of wood and finishing techniques will also be discussed. HANDS-ON. Howard Hale will teach this dynamic and fundamental, "3-session", class for all beginning turners. Session #1: Spindle Turning. This class is geared to help you get started on the lathe. Tool selection, handling, safety and machine basics will be covered. You will learn how to make cuts to produce beads, coves and other basic spindle shapes. Session #2: Bowl Turning/Face Grain. Perfect your basic skills by learning to turn a wooden bowl. Face plate turning, tool selection, techniques, sanding and finishing will be covered. Session #3: Bowl Turning/End- Grain. Learn to turn another style of bowl by it's end-grain. End-grain bowls are very different than face-grain bowls and will allow you to expand your turning skills. Howard is a great teacher and will provide each student with hands-on skills that will last a lifetime. No refunds for cancellations/reschedules within 7 days of class date.
