In this 4-part class you will gain knowledge and learn the proper techniques to turn rough cut lumber into a finished 3D cutting board. These beautiful cutting boards sell in kitchen stores for up to $450; this class will teach you why they are worth the cost. You will use woodworking shop equipment including the jointer, planer, bandsaw and table saw to turn rough cut lumber direct from the mill into dimensioned lumber. Then, using the lumber you milled, you will go through multiple cuts, glue ups, and sanding utilizing the drum sander to create your own beautifully crafted end grain 3D cutting board.

Turn Your First Bowl

Saturday, September 19, 2026, 2 PM - 5 PM

Students will learn and practice the cuts appropriate for shaping and smoothing the inside and outside of a bowl using a bowl gouge, parting tool and a scraper. At the end of the class students will have turned a bowl on their own!

Introduction to the Lathe & Turning

Thursday, September 24, 2026, 5:30 PM - 8:30 PM

This class will introduce the lathe, its parts, functions, and how to use it safely. We’ll also go over the two most common types of turning, side grain (spindles), and mixed grain (bowls). We’ll explore how they differ and the different tools used for each type, including spindle gouges, bowl gouges, skew chisels, carbide tools and more. Students will get hands on experience turning spindles and bowls using a variety of tools, including easy-to-use Hunter Carbide lathe tools. This class is designed for beginners and others interested in learning more about turning. Turners with some experience wanting a refresher are also welcome.
