In this 4-part class you will gain knowledge and learn the proper techniques to turn rough cut lumber into a finished 3D cutting board. These beautiful cutting boards sell in kitchen stores for up to $450; this class will teach you why they are worth the cost. You will use woodworking shop equipment including the jointer, planer, bandsaw and table saw to turn rough cut lumber direct from the mill into dimensioned lumber. Then, using the lumber you milled, you will go through multiple cuts, glue ups, and sanding utilizing the drum sander to create your own beautifully crafted end grain 3D cutting board.

Turn Your First Bowl

Students will learn and practice the cuts appropriate for shaping and smoothing the inside and outside of a bowl using a bowl gouge, parting tool and a scraper. At the end of the class students will have turned a bowl on their own!

Introduction to the Lathe & Turning

This class will introduce the lathe, its parts, functions, and how to use it safely. We’ll also go over the two most common types of turning, side grain (spindles), and mixed grain (bowls). We’ll explore how they differ and the different tools used for each type, including spindle gouges, bowl gouges, skew chisels, carbide tools and more. Students will get hands on experience turning spindles and bowls using a variety of tools, including easy-to-use Hunter Carbide lathe tools. This class is designed for beginners and others interested in learning more about turning. Turners with some experience wanting a refresher are also welcome.

This hands-on class is designed for beginners and provides a fun, safe introduction to woodturning while building confidence, creativity, and hands-on skills. kids will learn how to turn their own custom ice cream scoop on a wood lathe using easy-to-use Hunter carbide lathe tools. Students will be guided through each step of the process, including: lathe safety, proper tool handling, sanding and finishing to create and complete a custom ice cream scoop to take home. No prior experience is necessary.

Advanced Turning: Bowls with Undercut Rims

Thursday, October 15, 2026, 5:30 PM - 8:30 PM

This class will focus on the tools and techniques of turning a bowl with an undercut rim. We will turn bowls from blanks and undercut the rims using a variety of hollowing tools, including easy-to-use Hunter Carbide lathe tools. Materials and tools are included. Must have safety glasses. A face shield is preferred. Students may bring their own bowl turning blanks and sharp bowl turning tools if they prefer. Blanks must be between 6” to 8” in diameter and at least 3” -4” deep. Students must have taken the Introduction to the Lathe & Turning class and a bowl turning class prior to taking this class. If you have other turning experience but have not taken these prior classes you can speak with the instructor before enrolling. Those without the necessary prior experience and the level of skill needed will not be allowed to use a lathe during the class and refunds will not be given.
