Turning An Acrylic Cigar Pen

with Devon Palmer

Wednesday, August 12, 2026, 6 PM - 9 PM

Students will learn how to turn and customize their own Cigar style pen with an emphasis on Acrylic/alternate materials. This differs from Wood pens with the following points: tool selection and edge profiling best suited for turning acrylics, drilling bits and strategies to counteract meltdown of the blank and creating a clean thru-hole, pen tube selection and dealing with semi-translucent pen blanks, finishing/polishing with Micromesh and plastic polish. Devon Palmer will walk you thru the steps to create a pen you will be proud to give as a gift or keep for yourself! The day of the class, students can purchase accessories (pen kits, micromesh, drill bits, bushings, mandrel, press, clamps, etc) related to the class at a 10% discount. This is a great opportunity to stock up to make pens!

Pens, Pens, Pens

with Tom Wood

Thursday, August 13, 2026, 6 PM - 9 PM

This is a great way to learn about turning wood on a Lathe. Before you buy a Lathe, you can learn about how to safely use it and the tools and accessories needed to make a ballpoint or Rolling Ball pen and also pencils! Once you gain this experience, it opens up the opportunity to take a number of other turning classes we offer. Turning items on the Lathe will allow you to make items for yourself as well as distinctive and beautiful gifts for friends and family. Students in this class will learn how to cut pen blanks, drill and mount the blanks on the lathe, turn the pen barrels and apply the finish. The final step will be assembling the pen. Each student will complete a pen they will be proud of during the class to take home and show friends and family.

Finishing Series Pt 2: All About Top Coats

with Lori Andrews

Monday, August 17, 2026, 6 PM - 9 PM

Join our finishing expert Lori Andrews in a continuation of her Finishing series. She’ll teach you all about how and why to select, and apply different common types of topcoats on your projects, considering how your project is to be used. There’s a lot of misinformation out there, so take this chance to let our expert demystify the subject! Shellac, lacquer, oil- or water-based urethanes, or even oils and waxes, Lori will explain the pros and cons to help you select the right product, and get that professional finished look. Bring all your topcoat questions and Lori will help clear up your concerns, and she’ll have lots of examples so you can see how different products and finishes really look, leaving you with more knowledge and confidence to complete your own finishing projects. Part 1 (Coloring Wood) of this series is not required, but is a very helpful companion to your finishing knowledge base.
