In this class, students will create a beautiful box out of exotic woods with curved sides using the tablesaw and sanding equipment. The top of the box will have a perimeter inlay. The lid will be custom made out of a frame and veneered panel. This lid will rotate open using brass side pins. The interior of the box will have a custom-made removable jewelry tray with a suede-lined bottom. This is an approximate 30 hour class building on the skills that you have learned in Box 101 and 201.

A strong emphasis will be on proper milling of materials with jointers, planers & table saw work to make an end table.

Secrets of Joinery using Japanese Hand Tools

Part 1: Saturday, March 7, 2026, 10 AM - 5 PM

Part 2: Sunday, March 8, 2026, 10 AM - 5 PM

This class is a continuation of Japanese Woodworking 101 and focuses on the use of Japanese hand tools for joinery. Each student will make small model of a Tori Gate using 1 1/2 " x 1 1/2" poplar by making two dovetail joints, two lap joints and two mortise and tenons using Japanese tools. This class is recommended as a prerequisite for Japanese Woodworking 201 and Furniture 201. The classes are held on a Saturday and Sunday from 10 am - 5 pm each day with a lunch break. Please bring a notebook and pencil/pen to take notes. Prerequisite: Japanese Woodworking 101 with Adrian Summers.
