We are thrilled to offer a 3-day summer program for teens, ages 12 - 16 years old. Our safe, fun and educational projects will be perfect to help teens expand their understanding of hands-on woodworking and to develop confidence with basic woodworking tools. Teens will be working with a joiner/planer to mill wood; table saw, miter saw, band saw to cut wood and a drill press and power sanders. The classes are run by our team of expert youth educators who understand safe woodworking techniques just as much as how to work with and support beginning woodworkers. Your teen will make great projects that they can enjoy using at home for years to come. Monday's woodworking project is a table-top corn hole game. Tuesday's project is a cell phone amplifier/speaker and Wednesday's project is a bandsaw box. Each Teen Workshop is 6-hours from 10 am - 4 pm. Teens should bring a bag lunch for a lunch break. Drinks will be provided. Teens can register for 1 , 2 or 3 sessions, with a $75 savings if you register for all 3 days.
This is a three-night class to learn how make a 9" x 11" end grain cutting board using assorted hard woods, i.e. maple, cherry, walnut or purpleheart. Students will learn to mill rough wood, design their cutting board and coasters, glue up and clamp the design on the first evening. The second session will include jointing, planing, and a second glue up. The final session will focus on sanding and finishing the cutting board.
You will create a 12" x 12" kumiko trivet while learning the basic techniques of this hand-tool-centric Japanese art form.
This course will teach students how to make a simple box with a hinged lid.
This is our standard Fundamentals of Woodworking class, but for those who identify as women, nonbinary or queer individuals only.
This class is a continuation of Japanese Woodworking 101 and focuses on the use of Japanese hand tools for joinery. Each student will make small model of a Tori Gate using 1 1/2 " x 1 1/2" poplar by making two dovetail joints, two lap joints and two mortise and tenons using Japanese tools. This class is recommended as a prerequisite for Japanese Woodworking 201 and Furniture 201. The classes are held on a Saturday and Sunday from 10 am - 5 pm each day with a lunch break. Please bring a notebook and pencil/pen to take notes. Prerequisite: Japanese Woodworking 101 with Adrian Summers.
The band saw is one of the most useful tools in the woodshop and has become the shop standard for making curved and other irregular cuts. Learn the ins and outs of this most useful tool by way of a simple project. From a solid block of cherry, we’ll create a shaped box with two drawers. First we’ll cut the outside shape of the box. Then the back will be sliced off as a thin strip. Next, the drawer shapes will be cut from the block. Each of those drawers, in turn, will have both the front and back sliced off. Following that, drawer cavities will be cut. Finally all of the parts will be glued back together and sanded. As a final step, if time permits, a finish coat of oil can be applied.

Pen Studio hours gives you access to our lathe studio. You will be able to use our lathes, drill press, bandsaw, turning tools and face shields. You must provide your own turning stock and pen kits, whether brought from home or purchased in our retail store. Please note, this is for a 3-hour block of studio time. Those registering for open studio times are expected to do studio clean up.
You will learn what it takes to create a beautiful wooden bowl from 8/4 Soft Maple or Cherry wood. using High Speed Steel tools. Topics not only cover basic lathe operation, but also include wood selection, sectioning, face plate mounting, shaping, hollowing, sanding and finishing.
Using Cherry, Maple and Sapele wood, you will create a 3-Dimensional end-grain cutting board. Class will include milling the wood, 3 different glue-ups to create your 3-D pattern, sanding and finishing techniques. At the end of the class you will have a beautiful solid end-grain cutting board, the envy of all your friends!
Whether working in a fully equipped shop or just beginning your first project in your driveway, properly milled boards are essential. This is a skills class to teach you how to mill wood for your special project. We will cover the standard milling process to achieve S4S ( Surfaced on 4 Sides) lumber that will be ready for use. This class will provide hands-on experience with the jointer, planer and table saw. We will also cover alternative techniques which don't require the jointer. There is no final project built in this class, but you will leave with a perfectly milled board.
This class is a continuation of Introduction to the Lathe. You MUST have taken either a pen class or Introduction to the Lathe before this class. Topics cover basic lathe operation, wood selection, sectioning, face plate mounting, using carbide-tipped tools for shaping and hollowing, sanding and finishing.

This class is designed for beginning woodworkers or those who have been away from their hobby for some time.
Fan Carving is a very old carving technique where you make birds that have wings and a tail that fan out from the body from a single block of wood. You will use prepared blanks to make practice fans as well as a simple bird, while learning to lay out the interlock and hinge, rive the feather, carve the bird profile, and fan the wings and tail. You will have your choice of two fan bird patterns, a turkey or a chickadee. You will also learn how to prepare your own blanks for future fan caving. The class cost includes 2 blanks for making fan carved birds. Please supply your own carving knife and safety equipment (protective carving glove). You can also purchase the carving detail knife and safety glove at the reduced price of $40. The class is being taught by John L, a member of the Montgomery County Carvers.
We are offering a 2-day kids summer program for youngsters, 9 - 13 years old. You can sign up for 1 or 2 days, with a $ 25 savings if you register for both days.

In this class, we will cover sharpening and tuning techniques to bring the most out of your chisel, hand plane and scraper. We will discuss the best use of each tool and the best way to put and keep an edge on your tools. The class will cover sharpening, tuning, and hand tool selection while using water stones, honing guides and strops. If you have any bench chisels, hand planes, and scrapers that need to be sharpened, please bring them in for class. If not, we have plenty at the shop to practice on. Learn how to create relief carvings, in which wood is carved away around an object to make it look like it is standing off the surface of the wood. Students will learn how to transfer designs onto the wood, outline the design use stop cuts to remove surrounding wood, rounding, flattening the background, shaping the figure, layering elements of the design, undercutting for dramatic shadows, final clean up, and finishing. Participants will use the techniques to make a relief carving leaf design and a chosen design. This class is taught by John L and Ed K, members of the Montgomery County Carvers Club. The cost of the class includes 3 carving blanks, and a 5-piece relief carving kit including v-tools and assorted gouges. Participants should bring a fixed blade carving knife and hand safety protection. In this class, students will start with laminated panels of different exotic woods for box sides. You'll add an inlay strip to the top and give it a curved shape using the bandsaw and router table. The bottom of the box will be shaped with the bandsaw and router table as well. You'll learn to make cove cuts using the table saw to add curvature to the sides of the box. Finally, you'll learn to add a suede lining insert to the inside bottom. Please note: This is a 3 day class.
