Want to try woodworking but not sure where to start? Hundreds of people start here, where you'll "meet the shop"! We'll show you how to use most of the common hand and power tools in the modern woodworking shop. You will learn about taking rough wood into a finished piece using the planer, jointer, miter saw, router and tablesaw. The class project will be a Shaker-style table design and is a perfect blend of traditional joints and delicate lines. Learn mortise and tenon joinery, cutting tapered legs, and basic hand tool use of chisels and planes. Learn the fundamentals of woodworking and take home a hand crafted piece of furniture.

Introduction to Sketchup for Woodworking - CLS439

Tuesday, September 16, 6 PM - 9 PM

Attendees will be introduced to SketchUp software, and be guided through a hands-on tutorial of the basics of the software package. Attendees are highly encouraged to bring a laptop with a 3-button mouse. Attendees will be introduced to the software, shown how to start a design in 3D, and manipulating the view of the objects with mouse and keyboard. Demonstrate the measurement and layout tools, snapping to set dimensions, creating and editing unique components, creating groups, exploding groups, and building/assembling in 3D. Will address adding scale measurement and labels, Importing/Exporting and creating 2D example photos for projects, and review various software extensions for woodworking.

Wooden Sea Shells

My first reaction to seeing one of these shells was: “Well, how did he do that!” There are no flat surfaces from sawing, no curved surfaces from turning, no way to reach some parts for carving and sanding, so how? The process is relatively simple once demonstrated. It is, however, a process of many steps which are spread over several days. The total "work" time is short, a few hours at most, but lots of waiting. This means that a "hands on" class with a goal of a finished shell for the student is impractical. This Seminar will: * explain the process from start to finish * demonstrate each step * show intermediate stages * describe things to avoid * describe variations on the theme * explain “tips” for a better product
