High Angle Wood Block Plane
with Gary RogowskiPart 1: Thursday, October 2, 9 AM - 5 PM
Part 2: Friday, October 3, 9 AM - 5 PM
There is nothing better than building stuff for your shop. Join us in class to build a high angle wood block plane. Both the design and the high bed angle create a tool that is unmatched when cutting through highly figured wood, knots, or surprise grain direction changes. Learn how to make up a plane blank with an angled bed and a wedge pin to hold the iron in place. Then we shape and personalize the tool for use. You will also learn how to harden and temper tool steel (provided). Students will then polish and shape the steel blank, heat treat them and then temper the tool steel to create a plane blade. This method produces a blade that can be sharpened and wears well for years of use. We supply all the materials: hand plane wooden blanks and tool steel. Bring your measuring tools: tape measure, bevel gauge, smoothing or jack plane if you have one, half round file, scraper, hammer, crosscut back saw, chisels, and your sharpening stones. If you don’t have these tools we’ll have some to share. All levels welcome for this two day class. It's a treat to be able to make your own hand tools. When you grab for this high angle plane and it does the job well, you will gain a special sort of satisfaction. You will also walk away from this class with priceless information on hand plane geometry, tool steel heat treating, and hand plane use.
