If you would like to use hand tools more and be less dependent on machinery, this is a great opportunity for you. Take advantage of this class to create a hand tool foundation that you can build on. Learning to use hand tools correctly will open an entirely new woodworking experience, one that is enjoyable, very satisfying, and not as loud or dusty. Not many things in woodworking are more discouraging or frustrating than trying to use dull or neglected tools. In this twelve-week, one night per week class, you will learn how to use a handsaw and tune-up and use a hand plane, chisels, marking gauge, and marking knife. This is a skills-based class with a heavy emphasis on fundamentals, proper technique and safety. Students will be taught how to layout and execute fine joinery such as mortise and tenon, through dovetails, and half-blind dovetails. The instructor will also talk about wood movement and what can happen if you don't allow for it. During this class, students will build a traditional wall-hung cupboard with dovetailed casework and a frame and panel door using quality hardwood. Students will be required to bring some hand tools and they will learn how to make these tools perform at their optimum. Some of the lessons are: Sharpening chisels and plane irons Hand tool tune-up Sawing to a line Proper use of a chisel Using marking gauges and marking knives for accurate lines Using a hand plane Mortise and tenon joinery Dovetail joinery Wood movement Where and how to purchase furniture grade lumber Required Tools: Hand plane (number 3 or 4) Chisels (1/4", 1/2", 3/4", 1") Marking knife Tape measure Combination square Mallet Students are encouraged to bring the following tools but they are not required: Dovetail saw (western, Japanese, or gent) Marking gauge

In modern times it will find itself useful as a jewelry chest, tool chest, or storage for important or sentimental articles. This piece is constructed from sapele mahogany and maple is used as a secondary wood. There are many dovetails in this project so experience in this type of joinery is preferable. Alternatively, other methods of joinery can be used. Inlay, which is stringing and sand shaded fans, will be incorporated in the chest if the student wishes, Because there are so many hardware choices for this period, it will be chosen and supplied by the student.

Twice-Turned Bowl Made From Wet Wood

with Rick Angus

Part 1: Saturday, March 21, 2026, 9 AM - 5 PM

Part 2: Sunday, March 22, 2026, 9 AM - 3 PM

Turn bowls from wet local hardwoods recently cut and provided by instructor. The bowls first are prepared from a log with oversized walls, allowed to dry and turned a second time to finished dimensions. Students will receive a refresher in the fundamental gouge and scraper cutting techniques and review all procedures used in the Fundamentals course. We start with a bowl blank freshly-cut from a log. Before cutting it, we examine the grain lines and visualize the “bowl within the wood” and make a plan to reveal it. Blanks of wood will be mounted between centers and the grain pattern will be planned. We shape the outside of the bowl, remount the blank in a chuck and cut the inside leaving slightly thick walls. This bowl is allowed to dry (for three to six months) and distort to an oval shape (approximately). Next, students receive a similar but dried bowl prepared by the instructor. We examine our once-turned bowls and find the grain pattern planned when it first was turned. It is remounted on the lathe and the final shape is revealed through a process of removing the “high” spots of the oval until it is round again. This is based on visualizing the grain pattern and truing the spigot so that the dry oval bowl spins on nearly the original axis. The remainder of the process is cutting the outside while between centers, remounting in a chuck and cutting the rim and inside and finally mounting in a jam chuck to finish the foot. An oil finish brings out the luster of your project.

End Grain Hollowing; Make a Goblet From a Single Piece of Wood

with Rick Angus

Part 1: Saturday, April 11, 2026, 9 AM - 5 PM

Part 2: Sunday, April 12, 2026, 9 AM - 3 PM

Prerequisite: Fundamental Techniques in Spindle Turning Students will get a quick refresher in fundamental chisel and gouge spindle-cutting techniques and developing an eye for making the shape desired. Using these techniques, turners cut wood efficiently and leave a smooth accurate surface in their work. We learn how to use the bevel gracefully to guide the knife edge along a smooth curve and why this technique allows such smooth tool control. Additionally, we will learn to cut a hollow in end-grain using both gouge and scraper. We begin by rough cutting a blank to a cylinder and fitting a tenon to one end; the piece is then mounted in a chuck. Next, we shape the exterior of the bowl of the goblet. With a spindle gouge. Using the outside shape as a guide, we remove wood from the bowl with end-grain hollowing cuts using gouges and scrapers. This is sanded and oiled and now is complete. We move to shaping the stem of the goblet. Using the fundamental techniques of spindle turning with roughing gouge, spindle gouge and chisel (optional), we cut the stem spindle and shape the base. We finish with an undercut parting technique and the goblet pops of the lathe into your hand. A quick hand sanding of the bottom and add a quick oil finish to bring out the luster of your work.

It typically consists of a turned pedestal base with three legs, supporting a circular or oval top. The design is characterized by its simplicity, functionality, and craftsmanship. Shaker furniture, including candlestands, reflects the principles of the Shaker lifestyle: simplicity, utility, and honesty in construction.
