Fundamental Techniques In Bowl Turning

with Rick Angus

Part 1: Saturday, January 3, 2026, 9 AM - 3 PM

Part 2: Sunday, January 4, 2026, 9 AM - 3 PM

A shallow (2") functional bowl from a plank of cherry is the perfect introduction to the fun of bowl turning. Students will be trained in fundamental gouge and scraper cutting techniques and developing an eye for making the shape desired. Using these techniques, turners cut wood efficiently and leave a smooth accurate surface on their work. We learn how to use the bevel gracefully to guide the knife edge along a smooth curve and why this technique allows such smooth tool control. Any surface imperfections are smoothed with a scraper. We sand to perfection and add a quick oil finish to bring out the luster of your work. We will mount a round section of a plank on a faceplate and turn the outside profile of the bowl and provide a spigot or recess on the bottom. Using a scroll chuck, we remount the blank on the spigot or in the recess and turn the rim and inside of the bowl. Lastly, we grip the bowl by the rim in a jam chuck and finish the foot. This fundamental technique can be used to turn bowls of many sizes and shapes.

Fundamental Techniques in Spindle Turning

with Rick Angus

Part 1: Saturday, January 10, 2026, 9 AM - 3 PM

Part 2: Sunday, January 11, 2026, 9 AM - 3 PM

This class focuses on practicing proper techniques and we make a series of totems that contain examples of each cut that you learn; these serve as a reminder of the techniques that you learned. Beginning by roughing the blank to a cylinder, we practice the planing, chamfer and peeling cuts with the skew chisel. We proceed to the detail gouge and learn coves and beads. By putting all the techniques together, we will develop an eye for making the shape desired. The results of your practice are your totems for use as reference when making other projects.

Learning to use hand tools correctly will open an entirely new woodworking experience, one that is enjoyable, very satisfying, and not as loud or dusty. In this twelve-week, one night per week class, you will learn how to use a handsaw and tune-up and use a hand plane, chisels, marking gauge, and marking knife. This is a skills-based class with a heavy emphasis on fundamentals, proper technique and safety. Students will be taught how to layout and execute fine joinery such as mortise and tenon, through dovetails, and half-blind dovetails. The instructor will also talk about wood movement and what can happen if you don't allow for it. During this class, students will build a traditional wall-hung cupboard with dovetailed casework and a frame and panel door using quality hardwood. Students will be required to bring some hand tools and they will learn how to make these tools perform at their optimum. This piece is constructed from sapele mahogany and maple is used as a secondary wood. There are many dovetails in this project so experience in this type of joinery is preferable. Alternatively, other methods of joinery can be used. Inlay, which is stringing and sand shaded fans, will be incorporated in the chest if the student wishes, Because there are so many hardware choices for this period, it will be chosen and supplied by the student.
