Build a Shaker Style End Table

Our woodworking beginnings class introduces you to preparing wood to completing a nice little stool using dowel pins. The Shaker-Style End Table repeats the prep step and introduces you to Kreg jig joinery, tapering legs, and how to handle wood expansion. This class takes you through all the prep steps and introduces you to another design feature-bottom tapering the top to give another dimension to the overall look of the table. Like our other beginning classes, this is a stand-alone class. You can be a true beginner and still end up with a beautiful piece of furniture! This table is made out of solid cherry and is sized to act as an end table that will beautifully compliment the sofa table that many of you have built in our previous classes. The router has a reputation as being a tool that is mostly used by advanced woodworkers, but this is not the case. Properly used, the router can be the most useful tool in your arsenal. This class is designed to introduce you to the many ways this tool is used, from edge jointing to edge decorating to dadoing and rabbiting, as well as sign making. Properly jigged, the router can also be used for flattening and thicknessing lumber and even cutting holes and disks. There will also be some discussion about router tables. Bring your safety glasses, ear plugs, your own router (so Joe can see what you have to work with), and be prepared to learn about the scope and versatility of this most useful tool.

"Date Night" Cutting Board

Friday, October 18, 6 PM - 9 PM

This date night class is a great way for you and your partner to learn to make your own cutting board (approximately 8" X 16"). In this class, we will start with pre-cut wood strips of different species of exotic woods. We will also discuss the techniques of cutting the wood to the specific sizes needed for the cutting board. The process will introduce you to the thickness planner and orbiting sander. The cutting board will be finished with food safe mineral oil which will bring out the beauty of the wood. While the glue dries, we will have pizza to enjoy so bring your own non-alcoholic beverage and make this a date night to remember!

Turn a Snowman Ornament

Saturday, October 19, 12 PM - 4 PM

These dapper festive fellows will add joy to your Christmas tree or dining room centerpiece. This ornament is approximates 4" tall and is made from maple and will be a great addition to your tree or as a gift.

New Woodworking Beginnings

Part 1: Thursday, October 24, 6 PM - 9 PM

This woodworking beginning class has been very popular. The project stool will have two steps, a stable platform, and the first step can be raised to form the stool into a small chair. This will make it a very handy item to place in the bathroom or kitchen to allow a young child to reach the sink or it can be put in the family room and use it as small chair made just for them. Plus, it still works as step stool for adults to reach the top shelf in the kitchen or a closet. This class will introduce you to everything you need to progress from selecting wood for a project, to preparing it for finishing. It is designed for the person who knows nothing about woodworking but wants to learn the basics. We will use the table saw, jointer, planer, band saw, and other tools, as well as offering a discussion on several hand tools, all with an emphasis on safety. This is a great class for anyone wanting to see if woodworking is for them.

Bowl Turning Techniques

In this class, we will take a comprehensive look at the process of turning a bowl. We will discuss methods of roughing out, mounting with chucks, turning, and finishing a bowl. Any and all questions during this process are welcomed. We will turn a small bowl using spur and live centers, chucks, and a friction drive. We will do our turning with traditional turning tools.

This popular project is great for the beginning woodworker. If you have taken our "Woodworking Beginnings" class, this is a great way of taking what you have learned and moving up to building a fine piece of furniture. This sofa table will be made with cherry and will complement any décor. It will be approximately 15"d x 40"w x 30"h. and have tapered legs in the Shaker style. Turning and Embellishing a Simple Platter

This small platter is an easy beginner’s project, featuring a rounded top surface with a scooped-out center. The outer rim is embellished with iridescent paint on a black background. The iridescent paints are subtle but luminous, accented by rays of gold. One or more circular grooves frame the central cavity. This class will teach you how to make and embellish this beautiful, artistic form.

Make a Oval Shaped Charcuterie Board

Just in time for the holidays. Make this oval shaped charcuterie board to present your holiday favorites. In this class the students will be gluing together Cherry hardwood to the size of approximately 20"X 8". You will use the bandsaw to cut out the rough oval design. Then by the use of a template, you will use a router table to perfect the oval shape of the Charcuterie Board. You will be attaching rubber foot pads. Make a 3D Stair Step Cutting Board

This is a great opportunity to create your own stunning 3D Stair Step Cutting Board with the master himself, Alex Snodgrass. Using only three different woods – maple, cherry, and walnut – Alex will show each student how to make a 3D Stair Step Cutting Board that will really impress your family and friends. During the class, Alex will answer all of your questions about bandsaws, while covering basic topics such as bandsaw mechanics, tuning a bandsaw, and making perfect straight or angled cuts. Alex will also cover topics including glue-up techniques, how to plane and will debunk some common bandsaw myths. By the end of the class, each student will have a fantastic 3D Stair Step Cutting Board made with their own hands! This class is designed for woodworkers of all skill levels. You'll be shown the proper use of each from presentation to final follow-through. In addition to the use of these tools, you will be taught how to sharpen each one for maximum cutting. This class will also show you some techniques to get the most out of your tools. There will also be discussion on other aspects of wood turning, such as finishing and turning green wood, as opposed to dry wood. This class will concentrate on conventional turning tools.

Spindle Turning Techniques

Spindle turning is a great way to get started with your turning experience.There are so many things one can make with spindle techniques; it would be difficult to name them all but examples include baseball bats, scoops, canes, pool cues, candle sticks, and even porch columns, to name a few. In this class, one will learn to safely use the lathe and roughing and spindle tools. We will practice techniques that are applicable to almost any spindle project. We are open to any questions regarding equipment capabilities, tool techniques, wood harvesting and properties, and finally finishing possibilities. The student will learn a lot. Dust masks are recommended, eye protection and fun are mandatory.

In this class, we will build a basic Shaker style mudroom bench out of beautiful cherry wood. While most houses today don’t require a mudroom, these benches still have a place as an attractive and functional piece of décor.

Hand Planes - Part 1

Cleaning, Sharpening, Honing, Tuning. You may have an old hand plane that you have inherited or just couldn't resist as a good buy at a garage sale. Then, when you tried to use it, the results left a lot to be desired. All planes, even a brand new one, need tuning and some planes may even need a complete rebuild. If you have a plane that needs some TLC or a new one you need to learn how to tune and clean, this class will show you techniques to make your plane work efficiently. You will start with taking the plane completely apart, evaluating the condition of the parts, and fixing them as needed. You will learn how to sharpen and hone the iron with a provided jig.
