This is an approximate 30 hour class building on the skills that you have learned in Box 101 and 201.

Fan Carving is a very old carving technique where you make birds that have wings and a tail that fan out from the body from a single block of wood. You will use prepared blanks to make practice fans as well as a simple bird, while learning to lay out the interlock and hinge, rive the feather, carve the bird profile, and fan the wings and tail. You will have your choice of two fan bird patterns, a turkey or a chickadee. You will also learn how to prepare your own blanks for future fan caving. The class cost includes 2 blanks for making fan carved birds. Please supply your own carving knife and safety equipment (protective carving glove). You can also purchase the carving detail knife and safety glove at the reduced price of $40. The class is being taught by John L, a member of the Montgomery County Carvers.

In this class, we will cover sharpening and tuning techniques to bring the most out of your chisel, hand plane and scraper. We will discuss the best use of each tool and the best way to put and keep an edge on your tools. The band saw is one of the most useful tools in the woodshop and has become the shop standard for making curved and other irregular cuts. Learn the ins and outs of this most useful tool by way of a simple project. From a solid block of cherry, we’ll create a shaped box with two drawers. First we’ll cut the outside shape of the box. Then the back will be sliced off as a thin strip. Next, the drawer shapes will be cut from the block. Each of those drawers, in turn, will have both the front and back sliced off. Following that, drawer cavities will be cut. Finally all of the parts will be glued back together and sanded. As a final step, if time permits, a finish coat of oil can be applied.

End your fear of cutting dovetails by hand, once and for all, with our guest instructor - Bob Van Dyke. This is a class for woodworkers who have cut dovetails and have been frustrated by them but also for those who have some experience with woodworking but who have never cut dovetails. You will learn a number of ways to make "machine assisted hand cut" dovetails that only require a little bit of paring with a chisel to make them fit perfectly. This class is a combination of demonstrations and hands-on practice. There is not a project for the class - you will be working on a series of practice boards. Router dovetail jigs will NOT be a part of this class.
This class is not for beginning woodworkers, you should have intermediate woodworking skills for this class.
While some saws will be available to use in class, it is recommended that students purchase and bring a Lie Nielsen Tapered dovetail saw.

This class is a continuation of Japanese Woodworking 101 and focuses on the use of Japanese hand tools for joinery. Each student will make small model of a Tori Gate using 1 1/2 " x 1 1/2" poplar by making two dovetail joints, two lap joints and two mortise and tenons using Japanese tools. This class is recommended as a prerequisite for Japanese Woodworking 201 and Furniture 201. The classes are held on a Saturday and Sunday from 10 am - 5 pm each day with a lunch break. Please bring a notebook and pencil/pen to take notes.
Prerequisite: Japanese Woodworking 101 with Adrian Summers.

Making a Holiday Kiss-mas Tree is a one day workshop designed to give children between the ages of 8 - 11 years, a beginning foundation in woodworking techniques. Students will be predominantly using hand tools for safe construction with the exception of the battery powered hand drills and both manual and plug-in random orbital Festool sanders. All power tool preparation of materials will be done outside of class time to ensure safety of students. Tools used in class include: hammer, drill, screwdriver, pull and coping saws, ruler, tape measure, pliers, clamps, smoothing plane, sandpaper.
One parent is expected to stay with their child throughout the class.
