This class is geared for children ages 8 - 11 years. Students will predominantly use hand tools for safe construction with the exception of battery powered hand drills and manual sanding. All power tool preparation of materials will be done outside of class time to ensure safety of students. Tools used in class include: hammer, drill, screwdriver, pull and coping saws, ruler, tape measure, pliers, clamps, smoothing plane, sandpaper. The handing plant holder will be made with wood and metal. ONE PARENT MUST ATTEND WITH THEIR CHILD.
Get your hand plane working for you. Learn how to sharpen, set up and use your hand plane. In this skills-based class, you will take a used or out-of-the-box hand plane, sharpen it's blade to a polished edge, set it up to take clean shavings and use it to plane a rough board to perfectly flat on both faces and square all the way around the edges.
Using a variety of domestic and exotic woods, you will create a basket-weave pattern end-grain cutting board. Class will include milling the wood, 3 different glue-ups to create your colorful pattern, sanding and finishing techniques. At the end of the class you will have a beautiful solid end-grain cutting board, the envy of all your friends.

Spoons can be carved from wood in very simple shapes for beginners or with very intricate designs to challenge to even the most experienced carvers. The spoon is a simple, familiar object with concave and convex surfaces that provides a perfect introductory project to learn basic woodcarving. Each class participant will make a Celtic Love Spoon Carving over two 3-hour classes. This class provides instruction on woodcarving techniques and safety while working with hand-tools to create your very own spoon. The tools and materials for the class are included in the cost of the class, including the wood, sloyd knife, hook knife and sandpaper.
Learn how to turn a beautiful bowl made of local hardwood and resin using carbide-tipped tools.
This is a two night class to learn how make an 9" x 11" cutting board and matching 4" x 4" coasters using assorted hard woods, i.e. maple, cherry, walnut or purpleheart. Students will learn to mill rough wood, design their cutting board and coasters, glue up and clamp the design on the first evening. The second session will include jointing, planing, sanding and finishing the projects.
Get access to our lathe studio and be able to use our lathes, drill press, bandsaw, turning tools and face shields. You must provide your own turning stock, whether brought from home or purchased in our retail store.
Students will create a beautiful box with curved sides using the bandsaw and router table, pin-hinge top with inlay strips including a sectioned jewelry tray. You'll learn to make cove cuts using the table saw to add curvature to the bottom and sides of the box. Finally, you'll learn to add a suede lining insert to the inside bottom. This is an approximate 30 hour class building on the skills that you have learned in Box 101 and 201.

This class is designed for teens, ages 12 - 16 years, and is an intensive 2- day introductory class to the fundamentals of woodworking. Students will have a chance to learn about different types of joints using both hand and power tools, including the table saw, miter saw, bandsaw, router table, joiner and planer, as they make their own take-home project. The course also covers subjects such as wood technology, selecting and purchasing lumber, sharpening techniques and finishing. All tools and materials provided. Paper and Pencil recommended for note taking. Please wear closed toed shoes.

Fan Carving is a very old carving technique where you make birds that have wings and a tail that fan out from the body from a single block of wood. You will use prepared blanks to make practice fans as well as a simple bird, while learning to lay out the interlock and hinge, rive the feather, carve the bird profile, and fan the wings and tail. You will have your choice of two fan bird patterns, a turkey or a chickadee. You will also learn how to prepare your own blanks for future fan caving. The class cost includes 2 blanks for making fan carved birds. Please supply your own carving knife and safety equipment (protective carving glove). You can also purchase the carving detail knife and safety glove at the reduced price of $40. The class is being taught by John L, a member of the Montgomery County Carvers.

Topics cover basic lathe operation, wood selection, sectioning, face plate mounting, using carbide-tipped tools for shaping and hollowing, sanding and finishing.
Students will learn knife etiquette, basic cuts (stop, push and pull cuts) and a few extended/intermediate cuts, as well as how to care for and maintain your carving knife.

Pen 3 - Pen Studio hours gives you access to our lathe studio. You will be able to use our lathes, drill press, bandsaw, turning tools and face shields. You must provide your own turning stock and pen kits, whether brought from home or purchased in our retail store. Please note, this is for a 3-hour block of studio time. Those registering for open studio times are expected to do studio clean up.
