Introduction To CNC

Saturday, August 30, 9 AM - 5 PM

Ever wanted to learn how to design CNC projects? Join Steve for a day to learn the basics of using the VCarve software to design your very own project! Bring your own laptop and copy of VCarve if you have it. Students will leave with a small, 2-Dimensional relief carving of their own design. More advanced topics, such as inlay and 3-Dimensional carving, will be discussed.

Every woodworker knows that getting straight, true, and square cuts are half the battle in any woodworking project. In this class, we will teach you how to set up and correctly use a Jointer, Table Saw and Planer. While learning the fundamentals of these machines, you will make a project that you will be proud of. Intro to Design

Wooden Cheeseboard

Learn how to take an ordinary piece of wood and one of our Cheese Cutter kits and transform them into a beautiful Cheese Board that you would be proud to serve at any party or give as a gift.

If you have ever wanted to carve three-dimensionally but didn't know how to start or make your piece more life-like, this is the class for you. Whether you want to understand how to carve a realistic face, bears, horses, wolves or other animals, this class can help you do that. The class will offer direct instruction for novice carvers and guidance for those who are more advanced. The goal of the class is to make three-dimensional carving accessible and enjoyable for all carvers. Carvers should come with at least a 4 x 10 x 12 block of wood (basswood or butternut are easiest to work with). Carving tools should be of similar sizes & shapes as those listed.

Resin Cutting Board

Part 1: Monday, September 15, 3 PM - 7 PM

Part 2: Wednesday, September 17, 3 PM - 7 PM

This hands-on workshop will guide students through the design and creation of a custom resin-enhanced cutting board. Over two days, participants will learn the fundamentals of working with wood and epoxy resin, including safety protocols, preparation, color mixing, pouring, sanding, and finishing techniques. Students will leave with a fully functional and food-safe resin cutting board.

Join us in the shop and learn the basics of lathe turning and how to correctly turn spindles. This class is designed for the beginning turner as well as those students who have done some turning but may still have some questions about spindle turning. Each student will turn a practice spindle, and a small woodworker's mallet to take home. Students will learn the parts of the lathe, turning tools, proper turning techniques, finishing techniques used for turning, and SAFETY while turning.

Sharpening Turning Tools

If you have ever tried to sharpen a gouge, you know how frustrating it can be. We will show you how to save yourself time, frustration, and money, and learn how to grind your turning tools right the first time. Your instructor will demonstrate various ways to sharpen your turning tools using different sharpening systems.

Scroll Saw 101

Monday, October 6, 10 AM - 4 PM

This course introduces you to one of the most productive (and fun) tools in any workshop...the scroll saw. In this hands-on class, you will learn saw set-up, proper operation, proper blade selection, and how to fine-tune your scroll saw. You will learn how to make internal and external cuts and do several practice exercises that increase in difficulty as you go. By the end of the class, you will be ready to tackle any scroll saw project.

Router Basics

Saturday, October 11, 9 AM - 5 PM

Routers can be intimidating. In this hands-on class, students will learn how to safely use this versatile tool for creating decorative edges, cutting groove and dadoes, and template routing, among other techniques. Bit selection and router accessories will also be covered.

Cutting Board

Sunday, October 12, 10 AM - 4 PM

Learn to make a cutting board with various species of wood. You will prepare, glue, cut on a band saw, rout, and finally apply a food-safe finish. This process will result in a stunning cutting board! You will learn how to use a router and one of our templates to make a fun shape or choose to keep a traditional rectangular shape. Some sanding and finishing will need to be completed at home.

Introduction to Intarsia

Monday, October 13, 9 AM - 5 PM

Discover the art of intarsia woodworking in this hands-on beginner class! Learn how to transform simple pieces of wood into stunning, multi-dimensional works of art. This course covers the fundamentals of intarsia, including selecting & preparing wood, cutting intarsia patters on a scroll saw, shaping & sanding for depth & texture, & the final assembly & finishing of your project. Students will create a whale using materials and patterns included in the class, no prior experience needed!

This class is designed for those students who have done some turning but want to learn how to do a BOWL. Students will be introduced to faceplate and chuck turning. Students will learn proper mounting of the work piece, roughing cut, cutting and sizing tenon, outside and inside bowl cuts, scraper cuts, finishing the foot, and finishing techniques. Students will turn a bowl of their own to take home.

Hand Tools 101: Planes

Sunday, November 9, 10 AM - 4 PM

If you have ever wondered how woodworkers made furniture before they had power tools or if you just want to understand why your hand tools never seem to work as well as they do in videos and magazines, the classes in the "Hand Tools 101" series will answer those questions. In this class we focus on the Hand Plane, a tool that can flatten and smooth out a board for use in any project. We will teach you the art of sharpening, tuning and using a hand plane effectively. Once you have mastered the plane, it can be used to help eliminate a majority of your edge sanding. The result is a smoother surface in a fraction of the time; plus, it is a lot more fun than sanding! Students are encouraged to bring their own hand planes to see how you can tune and use your hand plane like a pro and have it perform like new.

Probably one of the most immediately gratifying woodworking projects is turning a pen. You start with a raw piece of wood, some hardware, and a couple of tools and within a short time you have a beautiful, functional project that you did yourself. Learn the fundamentals of creating a pen and leave with one you can use or give as a gift.

Take your pen turning to the next level using acrylics. They are both colorful and fun! You will learn the proper techniques for turning, sanding, polishing and assembly. You will leave the class with a beautiful pen in the color combination you select.

Bandsaw 101

Saturday, December 20, 10 AM - 4 PM

Join Steve for an introductory course on the bandsaw. You will learn about the parts of the bandsaw, proper operation, special techniques, and safety when using the saw. Students will leave having thoroughly practiced every major bandsaw cut, ready to use their bandsaw to its full potential.

Hand Sharpening 101

Never use a dull tool again! Bring your dull chisels and/or plane irons and join our staff in this beginning sharpening class. You will learn the theory & proper techniques used for sharpening many of your hand tools. Save yourself the time and frustration and learn how to sharpen your tools right the first time. Throughout the class you will help breathe life into those chipped and dull edges.
