with Christine Smith

Saturday, March 28, 2026, 9 AM - 5 PM

In this power-carving class, participants begin with a precut wood blank shaped for a Great Horned Owl tail feather, learning to use a power-carver to create the feather's natural 3-dimensional curve and taper. Once the basic shape is formed, students add intricate details by carving delicate barbs along each edge and using wood-burning tools to enhance fine textures, including the rachis and unique markings that give the feather its characteristic look. With step-by-step guidance, attendees then apply transparent color washes to build up the feather's muted browns, creams, and grays, using blending and layering techniques to create depth and realism. By the end, each participant completes a lifelike, three-dimensional feather with authentic textures and colors, capturing the beauty of the Great Horned Owl’s plumage.
