In this hands-on classroom workshop, you’ll learn how to sharpen the essential woodturning lathe tools used every day in spindle and bowl work. From the basics of edge geometry to practical grinding and honing techniques, you’ll gain a clear theory foundation and then apply it through guided, in-class practice. You’ll sharpen and refine a range of tools including gouges and skews, as well as scrapers and parting tools. You’ll learn how to recognize bevels, control angles, maintain consistent edges, and produce clean cutting performance—so your tools cut easier, finish smoother, and last longer. By the end of the class, you’ll walk away confident with the skills and techniques to sharpen your tools at home, turning sharpening knowledge into dependable results every time you step into the shop. This class is designed to introduce the novice turner to the wood lathe. Gerry will take you step by step through machine set-up, tool safety and usage. In this class, students will learn basic tool techniques and spindle-turning cuts used to complete a functional wooden mallet. Sharpening will be briefly covered. No Refunds for Cancellations / Reschedules within 7 days of Class date. Note: a $20 materials fee (cash or credit card) will be collected by the instructor at the start of the class.

Dovetail Box with Hinged Lid

Learn one of woodworking’s most sought-after joinery techniques and build a precision keepsake box in this hands-on class. Using specialized jigs and a router table, students will create clean, repeatable dovetail joints—no prior experience required. Each student will construct a small hardwood box featuring a functional hinged lid and a clean, professional fit. This class focuses on accuracy, technique, and confidence using modern woodworking methods that make traditionally difficult joinery approachable and successful. Throughout the session, you’ll learn how to safely use a router table with jigs, cut both tails and pins, and assemble your project with proper alignment and clamping techniques. We’ll also cover hinge placement and lid operation so your box opens and closes smoothly. At the end of class, students will have the option to personalize their box with laser engraving, making it a perfect gift or keepsake. All materials provided.
