When laying out screw-hole locations offset from the edge of a workpiece, I used to set a combination square to do the job. But then I remembered that I saw a carpenter once using a rabbeted block to mark the offset for his door and window trim reveals. I decided to make my block do quadruple duty by rabbeting all four edges to different commonly used offsets. When I found that the block also served as a great tablesaw and router depth gauge, I made a couple more to create a total of 12 rabbets, ranging through 3⁄4ʺ in 1⁄16ʺ increments.
