Mastering Hand Applied Finishes with: Don Washow

Description: This is an advanced hands-on finishing class for everyone. The class begins with a discussion on surface preparation and the selection of sand paper. You will learn what surface each grit will produce and be able to recognize when to advance to the next grit. Each student is expected to prepare numerous hardwood samples obtaining preparation results from 150 through 400 grit. The second half of the class will introduce you to numerous stains, dyes, sanding sealers, conditioners, and top coats. We will discuss and use oil finishes, oil and urethane combinations, varnish, oil and varnish combinations, shellac, and finally waxes. Surface treatment between coats will be addressed. The material fee will cover material samples, sand paper, and finishing supplies.

Description: Understanding the different types of routers available and their use is one of the most useful subjects in the woodworking industry. This is the same class that Don presents to manufacturers and it has been attended by product managers, tool designers and engineers throughout the router industry. Don will introduce you to and you will operate the following routers: Porter-Cable laminate router, Porter-Cable 690 series, Porter-Cable 890 combination kit series, Milwaukee Palm Grip and D-Handle 1-¾ and 2-¼ HP series, DeWalt D-handle 618, and the DeWalt 621 2 HP plunge router. Among the topics covered will be general router operation, maintenance, safety, router bit selection and operating techniques. Don will demonstrate advanced router techniques including pattern making, template routing, using a plunge router for joinery work, and jigs and fixtures. By the end of the day you will possess the information and experience necessary to select equipment wisely and to operate your router safely with confidence.

Description: Understanding the differences between sharpening systems and selecting the best system for you is one of the most confusing subjects in woodworking. Don starts at the beginning explaining the sandpaper system then continues to compare water stones, diamond plates, and oil stones. He will give you information on cross referencing the different grit systems so that comparing performance and price is easier. You will be provided with equipment to flatten and sharpen on sandpaper with a jig, however, diamond plates, water stones and oil stones will be available for everyone to use. You will learn how to hollow grind on a bench grinder, then hone on water stones to produce a surgically sharp tool. By the end of the class you will understand what sharp is and have had the opportunity to experience tools sharper than you could have ever imagined.

Mastering Face Frames & Raised Panel Doors with: Don Washow

Description: Starting from the beginning Don will show you how to prepare the stock necessary to build professional quality cabinet parts. You will build a face frame and raised panel door. Don will show you how to use the Kreg jig to build the face frame. He will discuss panel construction, router table set-up, safety and hardware. You will produce a door using CMT kitchen set in the Ogee style. The Blum European hinge system will be discussed in detail giving you a complete understanding of how to install them on face frame cabinets. At the end of the day you will have a cabinet front with door and hinges ready for assembly.
