Description: What is it about a box? It's a simple form with infinite possibilities. What it contains is wrapped in mystery until the lid is open. The box is also the building block for nearly all furniture. A drawer is but a box sans lid. A chest-of-drawers is but a box holding boxes. It all starts with the box. Taught by one of our resident artists, you'll learn to make a beautiful continuous-grain boxes. The same skills you'll learn in this class can launch you on a lifelong woodworking journey, or launch your skill-set into a higher plane. Box Making 101 is for all skill levels. Description: For ages 8-11 years old. This is a 3-week after school course designed to give elementary and middle school aged students a solid foundation in woodworking techniques. Students will predominantly use hand tools for safe construction with the exception of battery powered hand drills and both manual and plug-in random orbital Festool sanders. All power tool preparation of materials will be done outside of class time to ensure safety of students. Tools used in class include: hammer, drill, screwdriver, pull and coping saws, ruler, tape measure, pliers, clamps, smoothing plane, sandpaper. Students will learn a variety of skills, including: cutting wood, gluing & clamping, measuring, painting, sequencing-assembly, drilling & screwing, sanding, color-matching, hammering, following plans, hand-eye coordination & dexterity, modulation of effort/force, visualization (from start to finished project) and hinge function/placement.

Japanese Woodworking with: Adrian Summers

Description: Allow Adrian to introduce you to the basic tools and techniques of Japanese Woodworking. To start the class you will focus on creating a handmade layout square for marking and measuring as well as handmade sanding blocks to fit the contour of your hand. Discover how to correctly use a marking knife as well as how to cut a straight line with the pull saw. In the later part of the class you will design and construct saw ponies. If you have ever needed a large work table, but don't have enough room to make a permanent solution, simply lay any flat surface onto your new handmade saw ponies to create a quick space to work. You will learn how to hand chop a lap joint and carve the shoulders of the ponies with a mallet & chisels. Other techniques include how to trim joints with a slick and how to use handmade sanding blocks to get a perfect fit.

Using the techniques learned, students will make a whammy diddle (a traditional Appalachian folk toy) and a second, more personalized project.The cost of the class includes a fixed blade knife that can be used in class and taken home to practice, though no outside work is necessary for the class. Just don’t forget to bring your fixed blade knife back for the second day of class!This class is being taught by Michael H., a member of the Montgomery County Carvers. Description: This class is designed for those who are ready to build their first piece of furniture or who desire to improve their furniture making skills. A strong emphasis will be on proper milling of materials with jointers, planers & table saw work. Once materials are milled, students move on to hand held power tools and dust extractors. A natural follow-up to the Fundamentals class, this class will teach you a variety of basic furniture joinery techniques through the construction of a solid hardwood side table. Description: Allow Adrian to introduce you to the basic tools and techniques of Japanese Woodworking. To start the class you will focus on creating a handmade layout square for marking and measuring as well as handmade sanding blocks to fit the contour of your hand. Discover how to correctly use a marking knife as well as how to cut a straight line with the pull saw. In the later part of the class you will design and construct saw ponies. If you have ever needed a large work table, but don't have enough room to make a permanent solution, simply lay any flat surface onto your new handmade saw ponies to create a quick space to work. You will learn how to hand chop a lap joint and carve the shoulders of the ponies with a mallet & chisels. Other techniques include how to trim joints with a slick and how to use handmade sanding blocks to get a perfect fit.

Description: Japanese 201 will expand the student's skill set by covering sharpening, resawing, basic cabinet joinery and drawer construction. Students will lay out all parts on a single board of poplar and build a tool tote with a drawer using traditional tools and techniques including the planing board and wooden nails. Students will be provided with an MDF planing board and wooden nails. The instructor will provide a rabbet plane and students will be encouraged to bring their saw ponies from their JWW 101 class. Feel free to bring your lunch with you (cold storage available, microwave and toaster oven for hot foods) and plenty of water to keep hydrated. Each student will have a dedicated workbench with an anti-fatigue floor mat to keep you comfortable. This class is back-to-back weekends and encompasses 24-27 hrs of Instruction and Studio time.
