    Good idea but some issues

I like how well built this is and it seems to clamp well. However, there was a significant (on the order of 1/8" or more) lateral play that causes the bit to drill a non-circular hole. I've added some nylon washers to see if that will remove this issue. They make the vise harder to move, but have removed the lateral play.

    Almost perfect!

Received my Deluxe Self Centering Pen & Bottle Stopper Vise last week and I have to say I am very impressed. This vise makes it much easier and faster to put blanks in the vise and remove them. It is much better than the other vise I was using from that other woodworking chain store. I also like the large slots which can be used to mount the vise. I used t-nuts and 3/4" bolts to mount the vise to a piece of scrap 3/4" plywood. I also drilled a 3/4" hole at the end of the plywood so I can hang the vise on the wall behind the drill press. The only complaint I have, and the reason for not getting 5-stars, is it doesn't open quite far enough for the bottle stopper blanks. If the jaws opened just a 1/4" more this vise, in my opinion, would be perfect.

Similar complaint... doesn't open wide enough

I appreciate the 'center it, clamp it, and every future hole is centered,' but I turn acrylics and wood blanks that run up to 3"x3" or so, and this unit is useless for that. I appreciate the needs of pen-turners, but I'm startled that the manufacturer didn't think outside the (pen-display-)box on this one. Offer another model or modify this one so it can handle, in the same corner-to-corner fashion, a square blank of something more than 3.5x3.5! THEN, I'll buy one!

Wish that this could also be used for...

Wish that another insert could be provided for drilling rectangular knife handle blanks in the 1" x 1 1/2"-2" range. That would make it perfect for me!

    Works great but...............

This is a good vice and is well-built. My only complaint is that it doesn't accommodate the Woodcraft acrylic bottle stopper blanks without a lot of "forcing". Make the blanks smaller or the vice jaws open farther. Other than that, nice product.

Nice vise but hard to clamp to press.

Very nice vise but is quite difficult to clamp to drill press. You need to bolt it down because there is no tabs for clamps.

    Only one flaw

I use the vise to drill holes in calligraphy pens for the nib insert and grips for swords used in reenactment events. It set up quickly and easily. The only problem I found is that there is some side to side slipping, which is to be expected since the parts need to move freely. As long as this is taken into account the vice works great.

    Great vice

I made my own clamp based on a video I saw on line and the bit always came out wrong at the bottom. Then used a screw clamp, it was a little wobbly. This vice hit the spot the very first time. My only complaint would be the same for most of these is the chip removal after use. I kept having to pull the wooden plate out, knocking it off and then pushing it back through and pushing the other side clear. Not sure how to design around that. The other two at WC seem to have the issue even worse.

    Solidly built

Clamp it to my Shop Smith system in drill press mode. Centres blanks as advertised.

Awesome, this is the one to get

Whether you are small production pen turner or just a hobbiest, you will find this tool a valuable addition to your shop. If you already have a manual screw type one, give it away.

    Works great

At long last I can drill those pesky 7mm holes without the bit wandering off course! Align it once on the drill press table and use it. It is accurate and the results are completely repeatable. Like previous reviewers, I wish it would handle a larger blank.

    Need to work with it.

Give it a chance. It works very good once you get the hang of it.

    Good quality product

It would be be more versatile if it were longer and wider.

Works good, just wish it opened more

This is a great pen blank vice, easy to set up and works great. But as far as bottle stoppers, the jaws just do not open wide enough for some bottle stopper blanks. Wish they had a little more adjustment.

    Wood River Drilling Vise

Simply mark the center of one pen blank, or bottle-stopper blank, place it in the vise, clamp the vise on the drill press table, and drill as many blanks as you like. The hole in each blank will be centered, with no need for additional marking or adjusting for the various sizes of blanks. The vise is very easy to use and works well. I wish it could be customized to more easily clamp to a Woodpecker or Kreg drill-press table.

    Best I've Seen

Better design than I've seen elsewhere. I wasn't looking for a new pen vise but since this also would handle my bottlestoppers, I thought I'd give it a try. Seems very durable so far. T handle is a plus.
