Details

Poplar, Tulip Poplar or Yellow Poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera) is a domestic species that is very popular for paint grade projects. The heartwood is light cream to yellowish-brown with some occasional streaks of gray or green. It has a straight, uniform grain, with a medium texture. It is easy to work. We recommend sanding to a little higher grit than you might usually do prior to finishing. Poplar is a utility wood in nearly every sense. Common uses include utility cabinets and furniture, carvings, doors, millwork, mouldings, shelving, toys, teenware and turnings. Poplar veneer is also used for a variety of applications: either dyed in various colors, or on hidden undersides of veneered panels to counteract the pull of the glue on an exposed side that has been veneered with another, more decorative wood species.

Features:

  • The tallest hardwood tree in North America
  • Versatile wood with enough strength for most applications, sufficient stiffness, stability, and wear resistance
  • A film finish over stain or dye will make this wood look great
  • Native to North America
