    Love it!

The narrow guide works perfectly with the Stanley Sweethearts. To quote Mona Lisa Vito, it's "dead on balls accurate!"

    A Jig that acutally works

As soon as I got home with the MK II standard jig I went to work on a old Stanley No.7 and its Iron. The iron was absolutely dull chipped and in dire need of repair. I set up the Iron on the jig. The angle/alignment guide was simple to use and produced a square and correct angle with first time results. It took me about 20 minutes of honing starting at 220 grit to 2000. I could tell the edge was hollow ground most likely due to a grinding wheel because the iron was being sharpened on the edge and back of edge leaving the center untouched. Long story short, this jig straightened the blade and created a perfect 30 degree bevel and crazy sharp.

    Fantastic customer service

This is a follow up from my post two weeks ago. This guide is a solid, well made jig that does a exceptional job providing consistant and precise edges to your chisels and plane blades. My problem was the micro bevel feature resulted in skewed edges. I notified Veritas of my problem and they immediately sent out a new guide, first testing to insure accuracy. I got it in 3 days and it's dead on accurate. Further inspection of the two units shows the roller guide on the first very loose and sloppy. Bottom line, great company, great products, great customer service.

Be adviced about micro bevel adjustment

Generally you can't go wrong buying a Veritas tool but that being said, sometimes they don't get everything right. the MK2 is a solid honing tool that is well made and simple and accurate to use. The problem with using cheap honing jigs is the setup to get consistant angles. You must attempt to set the cutting edge flat against a surface before securing the honing jig. Too many times I've ended up with another facet on the cutting edge because the setup was a fraction of a degree off. The MK2 eliminates this problem with their setup design. My complaint is in the micro bevel feature. While I love the simple turn of the knob feature, I'm disappointed in the results. I just sharpened a 1" chisel that has a micro bevel ranging from 1mm to 2mm width, edge to edge. While i don't expect machine edge results, I do expect more consistancy width from edge to edge. For the price I paid, I expect better results from Vetitas.

    Worth the money

This worked great. I finally broke loose and got some good chisels. I wanted to make sure I took the time to sharpen them. When you spend 200+ on a set of chisels you want them to be as sharp as you can get. This takes a little time to get it setup correctly. once you get that done its a breeze and is well engineered.

    Well Worth The Money

This is a well thought out/engineered tool. It is hefty, durable and easy to set up/use. The myriad of angles you can set with this guide is unbelievable. Its only con is a problem that is systemic to all honing guides that clamp from above and below: the ability to maintain the squareness of the tool in the guide. When using light pressure and easy strokes during honing and polishing this is not a problem. However, if you flat grind on coarse grit sand paper, like me, you have to check the squareness of the tool in the guide quite often - regardless of how tight you clamp the tool. This is because of the down pressure you must exert in order to get the coarse grit to grind efficiently. If you just go back and forth over the same path it might not be a problem. The skewing of the tool arises when you turn the assembly on the paper in order to use all of the available abrasive area. Otherwise it is a five star item!

    Excellent device.

Very good honing guide. It is a little bit expensive, but, as usual, you get what you pay for.

    Absolute best

This is the best honing guide out there. It is quite expensive, that is true. However, as usual, you get what you pay for. This thing has a large roller wheel which helps keep your edge square to the stone. The set up seems complicated, but is actually very easy to use. It is fast. The weight is a big plus as it keeps everything stable and the edge on the stone. All of those are great features, but what I like best is that I can use this for my spokeshave and shoulder plane blades. The cheap and poorly engineered side clamping guides don't allow this. This accommodates 1/4" to 2-7/8" and nearly 1/2" thick blades. Made in Canada. Buy it, you won't regret it!

    A must have!

I've never been good at using chisels or planes. I finally figured out that these tools are not "sharp" out of the package and need honing. I invested in good Norton waterstones and learned the art of hand sharpening and honing. Effective but tedious and tiresome. I ran into a fellow in HD that recommended the Mark II. I took his advice and am absolutely sold! This jig is accurate and easy to use. The results are amazing and repeatable. The weight is a plus in my book. It is hefty and solidly built. Once you figure out the best way to hold it it is comfortable to use. I spent six hours sharpening all my chisels and plane blades and the results are amazing. Redressing a blade takes only a few minutes because the jig is dead on accurate. This is a must have. It is well worth the price.

    Love it!

Bought this after reading reviews and hearing from others. Works fantastic! After reading about honing edges on sandpaper instead of stones, I gave it a try with the honing guide. I was able to get a mirror polish without once ripping the paper. Try it!

    It works great but...

If you have several chisels to sharpen, I would suggest wearing gloves to protect your hands. The numerous tightening and loosening of the knurl knobs can really chew into your thumb. But that aside, I would have given this tool 5 stars. I holds the angle perfectly, very easy to setup, and the micro-bevel feature is very nice.

    Great for western tools

I own a lot of sharpening equipment - stones, machines, etc. I use this guide and the skew jig for all my western chisels and plane blades - anything where the sides and faces are all parallel. If the sides aren't parallel, the registration guide doesn't work. If the front and back faces aren't parallel, as in a Japanese plane blade, the clamp bar doesn't hold that well. That said, this is my go-to guide for any plane or chisel wider than 1/8". The roller bearings do tend to get dirtied up with slurry grit if you use it on water stones. Oil and clean them often.

    High Quality Precision Tool

This is a high quality precision tool hands down. There's no guess work. Check the angle of the blade to be sharpened, set the registration jig, insert blade to the stop, sharpen/hone to your liking and... perfect results everytime. I would recommend this guide over any other that I've seen. It may cost a little more than other guides, but well worth the "VERITAS" quality. Made to last a long, long time.

You want sharp tools? Get this thing!

I doubt there's much I can say that has not already been said in other reviews, so I won't try. I'll just give you the boots on the ground experience I had. I practice the "Scary Sharp" method of sharpening plane irons and chisels with progressively finer grits of sandpaper. I have a no name honing jig that seemed to work OK, but I have been less than thrilled with the ability to create repeatable results. I don't want to end up reworking a tool when I really just need a quick touch up. After reading reviews for a power sharpening system I decided to give it a try. What a waste of time and money! I'm not writing this review to slam a competing product, just know that you owe it to yourself and your wallet to try the Mk II first. After messing up a few chisels and plane blades I put the other previously mentioned product back in the box and decided to try the Mk II after watching some video reviews on youtube. What a difference! This is one well thought out tool; The ergonomics are good, the fit and finish are great and once you spend two minutes learning how to use it you will kick yourself for not getting it sooner. And did I mention sharp? I started with the worst of the chisels I had previously attempted to sharpen. After about 30 minutes I had one wickedly sharp chisel! Thank you Veritas for making a great product. This is my first Veritas tool, but you can bet it won't be my last.

    great product

If you have planes and do not use them cause you can never sharpen them good enough then buy this tool.I was afraid to try to freehand sharpen mainly because I never did it before and did not want to screw up the blades. With this honing jig and some wet/ dry sand paper I was putting a perfect edge on my blades in no time.Do not let the price scare you it is worth every penny.

    Works better than expected

First I sharpened an older chisel and it straightened the cutting end and gave it an excellant edge. Next I got a rather expensive block plane new and it came sharpened!! Gives consistant results.

Holds plane irons and chisels solidly. The wide wheel does not allow you to follow the radius of scrub-plane irons. The bulk of the jig makes it difficult (not impossible) to hone the back of the chisel/iron on the last lap to remove burr while still in the jig.
