Snakewood (Piratinera guianensis) has a fine, even texture with heartwood that is a dark red or reddish brown with conspicuous, irregular black speckles or stripes resembling skins of certain snakes. Grain is typically straight. Snakewood can be challenging to work due to its density and hardness, but it turns exceptionally well. When polished, it is one of the most beautiful species of hardwood. Common uses include inlay, veneer, violin bows, tool handles, and other small turned or specialty objects.

Finishes beautifully
This wood makes a beautiful pen. It is very hard and finishes well with an interesting design that resembles snake skin

beautiful wood, great finish
I turned this for an atlas pen kit. I was told ahead of time that this can be a difficult wood to work, so I made sure to take my time and be careful. The only issue I had was in drilling it. It got *really hot. In hindsight, I did rush the drilling, so it was my fault. My advice would be: Take your time drilling and working this wood. If it gets hot after drilling, let it rest before gluing the tubes in. That being said, it is well worth the time.

1 Piece Not 1 set as shown in Pics.
Thought I was getting 1 set (shown in internet pic.) vs. 1 piece when received in mail. Very misleading. Bought for 12 yr. old son, woodshop project. If I'd known it was only 1 piece I would have driven to local shop about 15 miles away. I thought ordering online would be quicker. Wrong!!! I would not have paid [$] for 1 piece of wood.
