SOLID PERFORMANCE, QUALITY TOOL
I have owned the DW682K Biscuit Joiner since 1993, back when it came with a steel carrying case instead of the plastic ones of today. The price has gone down: I paid nearly the same price back then, but when you consider inflation, the current price of today is a considerable price drop! … Picking a new one up in the store, the machine and provided accessories appear unchanged from the one I have, but I cannot speak for the components inside the tool such as bearings, motor windings, and the like. However, if you go to the DeWalt web page, the tool has more than one variant or "Type" to select for parts, so there have been changes over the years. …. This tool was ready-to-go right out-of-the-box and needed no grooming to tune it up. .... Since 1993, while I have not used it very heavily, I have used it steadily on many various projects and I have had zero problems with it. Most useful for sheet goods, but I have used it on soft and very hard woods (ex: bubinga) as well. All adjustments including the rack and pinion fence continue work very well and lock up in position with no drift using just moderate pressure on the thumbscrew locks. I have changed the blade twice without difficulty, and it takes standard-sized blades. …. All controls work very well and the handles are nicely ergonomic, making it easy to use in a variety of positions. …. The blade is adequately parallel to the bottom face ("aluminum shoe") and to the adjustable rack and pinion fence. …. Marks to indicate the center of the cut both vertically and laterally are right on the money, but the indication marks are a bit thick for my liking. …. Selection of biscuit size adjustments (really, this just limits the depth of the cut) is positive and crisp with preset depth stops for common biscuit sizes. …. The anti-slip pins work OK. Calling them ANTI-slip is a reach. However, with proper technique, it is definitely not an issue. The pins do not have sharp points and are spring-loaded – they don't really bite into the wood. They don't mar the wood either, but you probably wouldn't care if they do since it would normally be covered in the glued joint. Retracting them is a nice option if you want to make a spline joint, but getting a straight cut without any wobble takes practice (look at using a router or other setup). …. The scales for height adjustment and angle indication are not very accurate in that the pointers have a thick line and stand some distance away from the scales, making accurate scale readings difficult. but as a practical matter, I find I really do not rely on them except to get me close to where I want to go. I fine-tune either by eye, using other measurement tools, or by using test cuts. The "45° locating notch" in the fence is handy and works well for mitered joints. …. I have never used the wire-framed cloth collection bag for chips and dust, but it attaches securely. I either use the elbow attachment that can be adjusted to spray the chips and dust in a particular direction (making a fairly contained mess), or I (usually) use the attachment to connect a vacuum. …. Fit and finish are first-rate. .... The tool makes a racket, so wear ear plugs or other hearing protection if you're going to cut a lot of slots in one session. …. BOTTOM LINE: The DeWalt DW682K Biscuit Joiner is a solid, well-designed, well-made power tool that works very well. I am very pleased with it and would definitely buy it again. Rates a 4 of 5: not perfect, but areas for improvement are minor. Before laying down the money, I would, however, also take a good hard look at the Porter Cable Model 557 which probably would be my first choice. The P-C 557 did not yet exist when I bought my DeWalt, and Lamello was, and still is, too pricy.
