The Recipe Box (And How To Make It!) – Part 1: The Initial Design & Build
Christmastime is one of those perfect times of the year to make someone a special handmade gift. So I took to the shop after Thanksgiving, stepping away from my lathe and decided to do something different. With my daughter Maddy’s growing interest in baking, I decided to make her a heirloom Recipe Box as a Christmas gift. I purchased a Bubinga board about 6 ft.in length x 11″ wide x 3/4″ thick from Woodcraft. It had such beautiful figured grain and sort of a pink-brown color to it, perfect for my 16 year old. It has been a number of years (about 35!) since I’ve done any flat work, back in my Boardman High School days in Ohio, learning under the tutelage of Mr. Haug, my woodshop instructor.

Corner Band Clamp Presented by Woodcraft
Picture frames, hexagon, circular and just about any other shape, can be securely held with this clamp.

Use With Care
Best used for lightweight objects on a bench top, Excellent if used carefully. Heavy stress will damage the tool.

handy clamp
great for jewelry boxes

Weak all around
I took it out of the package to look at it before use, when I flipped the clamps for the webbing down a couple of times, they broke. The cheap plastic was not a very good idea for this. I managed to jerry rig it to make it work (tied a knot in the webbing where the clamp broke) and I could not get it tight enough to do much. Threw it away shortly after.

Just what I needed!
This band clamp is like having an extra pair of hands. You can put your project together w/your glue, secure the band clamp and go to work on something else while the glue dries.

This clamp, though a good idea, suffers from poor, I mean poor! construction and materials: Cheap plastic at critical points - like the clamping scew and strap retainer there-on. Had to trash it after one use: re-gluing of chair legs.

Photo frames
I use it to make photo frames , trays and trivets

Jewelry boxes
I used the product to layout lids and box sides for jewelry boxes of specialty woods. I was amazed at how fast and easy it made these items fall into place.

Better in pairs
I just used this clamp for the first time on a humidor I'm making. It would be hard to accurately place it anywhere except the bottom of your project where it can rest on your bench as you tighten it. With a second one, you could flip your project and apply one to the top. So I'll pick another up in my next order. You can't have too many clamps!

Good value
Works well for it's designed purpose. May not last forever due to economical construction.
