WRONG BIT
The stoppers work well once one realizes that the pilot bit is sized incorrectly. I ended up using a 7/32 bit instead. Tight for the mandrel (which is good), but perfect for the stopper itself. You are, as one reviewer noted, better off buying the individual components.

you will end up spending more...
first of all, at the price that your paying you don't really get any special value. you are better off buying the stoppers, drill bit, and mandrel separate. the drill bit is to big to start off with. yes you can get by with the drill provided, you just have to glue the stud into the wood when you assemble it. The mandrel that came with mine sheared off inside the wood..my guess is just poor quality steel. it snapped under regular use on its second bottle stopper. Im going to try the Whiteside mandrel and hopefully i don't get the same result. So basically if you buy this package your pretty much buying 2 mandrels and 2 drill bits. save a few bucks and buy them separate.

Good idea poor product
These could be very nice gifts but it will take a while to turn the threads on the mandrel down so the stopper threads will fit in snug. The drill bit is also too large but that was easily fixed by just using a smaller drill bit.

wrong size stud
The stopper itself is good looking and appears well made. The problem is the included studs are the wrong size. Too small for the threads in the stopper and the mandril. You can solve it by replacing the stud with a cut off 1/4" x 20 x 1 1/2" stainless bolt, but you shouldn't have to. I am waiting for Woodcraft to respond to my request for the proper size studs.

Not what I expected
For a starter set it is a great value, however the drill bit supplied is too big and therefore the included mandrel stripped out in the hole. I compensated with a smaller drill bit and the problem seemed to go away. The threads in the stopper itself are very loose and a drop of glue or epoxy is needed to keep everything tight.

good start kit, but not complete.
A good starter kit for wine stoppers, but my kit did not come with O Rings. Looking at the web site and the package the kit comes in, it does not list the O rings as part of the kit. It would have been nice to see something said about the rings not part of the kit so I could have gotten them the same time I got the kit. So the stopper are usless right now until I can order the rings or head back up to the store and pick up some - if they have any there since I never seen them for sale at the store.

Mandrel works well in hardwood. If doing soft wood might consider a slightly smaller dia. drill.

the only complaint is that when you screw the stopper on the stud it is not true.
