Barr has been working with tool steel since 1977 and as a professional knife maker has had the opportunity to work with some of the best blade smiths and blacksmiths in the country.

In a day and age where most tools are drop forged, stamped or cut out and then poorly tempered, a majority of people have never had the pleasure of using a well-made tool. Hand forging with hammers compresses the steel, introducing more carbon into a smaller area. Carbon is what cuts, therefore you get a superior edge. After annealing, the tools are quenched then tempered to the proper hardness. The tool is handle that seats properly in the socket. The shock ring on top helps prevent then fitted with a hardwood splitting.

  • Hand-forged tool steel
  • Individually tempered
  • Steel ferrules
  • Fitted socket handles

    Good steel, handle ok

I have has zero issues with the steel, seems to holding up quite well. However, the handle on my 1 1/2" chisel has mushroomed a bit, otherwise I have been very satisfied.

    Industry Standard

I use Barr chisels every day to build timber frame structures. They are sturdy, keep an edge, and can take any abuse thrown at them. I have never had a problem with corrosion or issues with the handle and I don't exactly treat the things with incredible carefulness. Simply put, Barr chisels are the workhorses of the hand-crafted timber frame industry in New England.

    A master piece of Steel

Barr Tool are the best for the money. I work with these chisels everyday and they have never let me down. They come shaving sharp and ready to use, which most others requiring honing before use. I can say that i have never had a handle split, but the only thing that ever hit the chisel i a 18oz urethane carves mallet and nothing else. you can't go wrong buying these american made tools!

    Hesitant in recommending

Not sure if they struck the right balance in the steel (i.e. softness/ease of sharpening vs. corrosion resistance. Bought one in April, stored it with my other tools. I always resharpen and coat with a protecting oil after each use and it has already shown significant signs of corrosion whereas my other tools and chisels appear fine so I know its not my treatment/care. This has been a very DRY summer in my region with low humidity so I'm worried about the longevity of this tool. Had the Mrs. contact them about the steel grade and any other issues and all she was told was that tools are expected to rust. They would not confirm anything about the steel grades and were very unhelpful. This was one of my first times buying from this company and I'm hesitant to make any future hand tool purchases. I'd only recommend this for someone that has a climate controlled wood shop.

Great Chisel, but skip on the engraving

Chisel is well made and feels good in your hand. ONLY issue is slight and can be ignored and that has to do with the engraving, I thought I was getting my name laser engraved on the METAL somewhere. But instead it was engraved on the disposable wooden handle that a previous reviewer mentioned broke on the first day. It hasn't broken on me yet but it's only a matter of time. Get yourself the chisel tip protectors

    Decent steel ; poor handle.

Chisel arrived sharp; nice edge. Handle split after 12 blows from a wood mallet. Yes, the steel ring was installed on handle.
