Introduction To Pen Turning - Wood Blanks

Students will learn how to select a wood pen blank and prepare it for turning the desired pen kit. You will learn the difference between High Speed Steel and Carbide as well as the pros and cons of each. Turning to the desired shape you choose. Sanding to be free of grain defects, remove tool marks, dents and other defects. Apply finish and avoid streaking. Assembly of the finished product to show off to friends and relatives. There will be a break for lunch and many restaurants are near by.

Participant will learn how to select wood based on species and grain orientation. How to mount the wood using two different technics. You will learn the difference between High Speed Steel and Carbide as well as the pros and cons of each. Learn how to select the right tool for the turning and shaping of the bowl. Preparing the sides and face for shaping. Shaping the bowl and hollowing the inside. Finally comes the sanding and finishing. There will be a break for lunch and many restaurants are near by.

Sharpening Lathe Chisels

Sharp tool equals good finished products. This course will teach the basic skills needed to keep your chisels in good cutting condition. You will learn to sharpen the roughing gouge, bowl gouge, spindle gouge, parting tool, and a skew chisel. Grinding is done on a slow speed grinder with an aluminum oxide wheel and a CBN wheel. Bring any two of the five basic tools you would like sharpened.
