Woodworking Fundamentals I

This class is designed for beginners who want to learn how to safely use the core tools of the wood shop. During the first half of the class, we will focus on how to properly flatten and size lumber using the table saw, jointer, and planer. Once the material is flat and square, we will discuss glue up methods as we join the material to create a cutting board. The second half of the class will focus on safely using the router and router table to shape the board and apply a decorative edge. Students will leave with a completed project and a great foundation for starting their woodworking journey!

Oil Finishing By Hand

More than an afterthought, more than simply preservation and protection, finishing is THE step that takes you from project to masterpiece. There is no better compliment to a fine functioning piece of woodwork than a deep, rich oil finish that is also easy to maintain. In this class, students will learn how hand rubbed oil finishes enhance both the beauty and livelihood of wood, a brief history of finishing, demonstrations of several brands and types of finishes, and the student will leave with a hardwood trivet (or cutting board?) with one coat of the finish of their choice and the know-how not only to keep it beautiful, but also to nourish the beauty as the years go by. Woodwork only gets more beautiful over time when hand rubbed oil finishes are used.
