Used as a sanding sealer, a pre-stain conditioner, or as a glass-smooth topcoat, shellac is one of the most versatile and widely used finishing materials in the history of woodworking. It is not only one of the most beautiful, but one of the least toxic and fastest drying finishes available. Reading about it is helpful but nothing beats the hands-on experience of applying shellac using many different methods including padding and brushing techniques, French polishing and spraying. You'll learn the differences between flakes and pre-mixed, how to mix your own and how to choose which type to use. Sign up today and discover the beauty and versatility of shellac!

Chip Carving

Sunday, November 2, 2025, 10 AM - 4 PM

Chip carving consists of a set of triangular or curved cuts laid out in regular, geometric patterns, but can also be more free form, as in lettering or images. You will need to bring a Chip Carving Knife like the Pfeil style B, or similar. Your instructor, Bart Dunning, will teach you about the handling and care of the knife. You will learn how to draw a pattern for cutting, make the various cuts and develop a “feel” for the wood, as well as what woods are preferred. Dealing with mistakes, short of adding fuel to your fireplace, is also part of the class. You will leave with some new skills, some new friends and, hopefully, a carved coaster. Note: $5 materials fee payable to the instructor at time of class.

Epoxy & Wood: Create Your Own Tray

Ready to try something new? Learn the art of combining epoxy and wood to create a stunning serving tray using a pre-formed, quick-release silicone mold. You'll also discover how to personalize your tray by adding cool stuff like natural elements or everyday objects into the epoxy. Plus, you'll get hands-on experience using power tools to add that professional, finished look. This class is taught by Terry Daughtery, owner of Wild Edge Woodworking, who's an expert in live-edge and epoxy resin work. Note: A $60 materials fee (cash preferred) will be collected by the instructor at the beginning of class.
