Edge grain boards are made by arranging wood strips so that the edges of the strips form the cutting surface. This construction style imparts a unique design, remarkable durability to the board and holds up much better to cutting and chopping than simpler face grain boards. Students who take this class will receive expert guidance while safely using several of the core tools of the wood shop as they create their board. Under close supervision, students will be assigned to their own lathe where they will learn to turn small bowls by the end of class.

Making a Music Box Using a Laser In this class you will use an xTool

The F1 laser is a small portable laser that can engrave and cut wood, leather, and other materials. You will use xTool Creative Space or Studio to create one of two designs and process a box. You will use the F1 laser to cut and engrave plywood into the design you selected. You will glue the pieces together using several holding methods. In the class we will discuss finishing and flocking techniques for you to use on your own when the glue has cured. Materials Cost: Music Movement $10 Cherry 1/8 x 5 $20

In this exciting hands-on class you'll learn the skills required to start making spindles on the lathe as you turn two objects: a cove and bead stick and a vase. Tools covered include the roughing gouge, the spindle gouge, and the parting tool. A wood-turned mallet class teaches you to use a lathe to create a useful woodworking tool, perfect for beginners as it covers fundamental skills like spindle turning, shaping with beads/coves. This full-day, hands-on class is designed for beginners who want to build a solid foundation in woodworking while completing their very first project. During the morning session, you'll learn essential woodshop safety practices and become familiar with the operation, purpose, and safe use of common woodworking machines and tools, including the table saw, bandsaw, planer, jointer, drill press, routers, sanders, and more. Our experienced instructor will demonstrate each tool and explain when and how it is used in a typical woodworking shop. After a one hour lunch break, you'll put your new skills into practice by building your own traditional 5-board step stool from start to finish. You'll measure, cut, drill, assemble, and sand your project while receiving hands-on guidance every step of the way. At the end of the class, you'll leave with the confidence to continue your woodworking journey, your completed 5-board step stools.
