Hand tools are a necessary part of woodworking project. After machining, you will need to smooth the surface of your work piece with a hand plane or maybe remove a small piece of wood to make the joint fit with a bench chisel. In this class different hand tools will be discussed and demonstrated. How to use a bench chisel to make a crisp edge, how to smooth and remove milling marks with a smoothing hand plane are just a few examples of what will be discussed and demonstrated. Multiple topics will be discussed such as: What are the different types of hand planes? What is the first hand plane to purchase? What is a good hand saw? How to use a marking gauge? This is a beginning course on how to use Sketchup to design your woodworking projects. The objective of the course is to teach students the basics of Sketchup, including configuring the toolset for woodworking design, basic navigating, drawing, and editing. Are you ready to finally understand the basics of how to hand finish the project you just spent hours building? Basic wood finishing is the perfect class for you. The one day seminar is geared towards explaining and demonstrating the basic concepts and processes behind sanding and finishing. The course will cover all aspects of wood preparation, coloring and finishing. The goal is to give students a basic understanding of the different techniques for applying color, and finish by hand. Topics covered include wood selection, sanding and preparation of material, pore filling, oil and water based dye stains, and how to finish. Additionally, it will demonstrate techniques for enhancing grain and how to identify the proper protection of future projects. In this class you will learn a quick and easy way to repeatedly and consistently sharpen all of your wood turning tools using the Wolverine sharpening system on a slow speed grinder. The Vari-grind jig will be demystified and you will be shown a simple method to sharpen all of your bowl and spindle gouges. This is a beginning course on how to use Sketchup to design your woodworking projects. The objective of the course is to teach students the basics of Sketchup, including configuring the toolset for woodworking design, basic navigating, drawing, and editing. The student will also design a table to put all the skills to use. Each student must contact the instructor before the class (1 week ahead is strongly encouraged) to arrange/select how to obtain the software. Three options will be provided, two of which require working with the Windows operating system. The online free Sketchup version will not work for this class.

Have you wanted to do projects such as kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanities, bookcases, and shop/storage cabinets? If so, this is the class for you. You will learn the common techniques for any of these projects. During this six hour class the instruction will include the selection of materials, dado and rabbet joinery, making face frames and raised panel doors providing you with the fundamental skills to apply to any of these types of projects. During the class, the instructor will build, with class participation, a wall cabinet to demonstrate the basic joinery methods for making the carcass and fabricating the face frame and raised panel doors.

Are you ready to finally understand the basics of how to hand finish the project you just spent hours building? Basic wood finishing is the perfect class for you. The one day seminar is geared towards explaining and demonstrating the basic concepts and processes behind sanding and finishing. The course will cover all aspects of wood preparation, coloring and finishing. The goal is to give students a basic understanding of the different techniques for applying color, and finish by hand. Topics covered include wood selection, sanding and preparation of material, pore filling, oil and water based dye stains, and how to finish. Additionally, it will demonstrate techniques for enhancing grain and how to identify the proper protection of future projects. All supplies will be provided and students need only a basic knowledge of sanding, wood species, and finishing terminology.

Students learn to construct a simple keepsake box. Students will learn basic box techniques that include machine setup, select grain pattern, surface/resaw lumber, grain wrap, cut accurate miters, cut dados, rout raised panel lid, box glue up and clamping, cut and install splines, rout finger groove, and relieve box lid. Discussions will include sanding, selecting and applying finish, installing hinges, and alternative box making techniques.

This class teaches lathe safety, proper body mechanics and the use of basic tool techniques to produce two of the most commonly found shapes: beads and coves. After learning these techniques you will have the opportunity to turn one or two small projects chosen by the instructor. Once you’re hooked on turning we offer pen, bowl turning and other turned project classes.
