Stabilizing Wood

Wood stabilization is a number of processes which use pressure and/or vacuum to impregnate wood cellular structure with certain monomers, acrylics, phenolics or other resins to improve dimensional stability, biological durability, hardness, and other material properties. We will use cactus juice to introduce an acrylic resin into the wood, to occupy all the little nooks and crannys that water can absorb into in the cells of the wood. Students can bring small pieces of wood to stabilize no larger than 4 inches long by 3 inches in height and 3 inches in depth due to the size of the drying oven. Students will learn about stabilization on September 26th and start the process by submersing their wood into cactus juice in a vacuum chamber. Wood will soak up to 24 hours and then be dried at 200 degrees Fahrenheit. Students will unwrap their dried wood and turn a small project with it on September 30th.

Without a doubt, the tablesaw is the most important power tool in the shop. Safely ripping stock to width, accurately cutting parts to length, cutting angles, bevels and making tenons and tapers are just a few of the tasks that an accurately set up tablesaw excels at. Understanding how the saw works is one of the goals of this new class and basic common sense safety will be covered thoroughly. We will begin with techniques to make safe and specialized cuts such as making accurate tenons and miters. This class is designed to take a beginner/intermediate woodworker through the steps to make a steel string acoustic guitar from a unique kit. You will learn the terminology and the techniques focused on many of the specialized processes to complete your own personalized intrument. The process is broken down into small steps to familiarize the student with the construction of the neck including truss rod intallation, fingerboard & fretting, abalone inlay and construction of the body including brace trimming/fitting, top installation, bridge gluing/alignment, purfling and final fit up of the neck to body joint using a bolt-on system. If you've been interested in trying segmented bowl turning, or want to take your previous segmented process to a new level, this class is for you. Bill will show you how to use compound angle cuts and unique gluing processes that create unusual effects in your finished bowl. Unless you've worked with Bill in the past, you have probably never seen this process done before. During the class, students will learn how to set up and use cutting fixtures to produce precise angle cuts on the compound miter saw, plan their segment layout and then glue the pieces together to maximize the beauty and figure of the wood. All steps from wood selection, cutting, layout, glue up along with turning tips will be covered. There will be some simple turning processes done by students during class to prep the bowl blank components assembly during the building process. Students will also learn how to take the information from this class and add even more features like open air spaces and use of contrasting veneer. At the conclusion of the class, students will have a rough, unfinished bowl blank to take with them to finish turning in their home shop. - Students need to bring in one 3" to 4" faceplate from their home shop lathe.

Without a doubt, the tablesaw is the most important power tool in the shop. Safely ripping stock to width, accurately cutting parts to length, cutting angles, bevels and making tenons and tapers are just a few of the tasks that an accurately set up tablesaw excels at. Understanding how the saw works is one of the goals of this new class and basic common sense safety will be covered thoroughly. We will begin with techniques to make safe and specialized cuts such as making accurate tenons and miters. Saw blade selection, dado blades and some of the commercially available accessories will be discussed. We will also demonstrate some basic but important shop made jigs. Turned wooden bowls can make your dining experience truly memorable or create a display piece to show off your talent. This class will focus on using basic turning tools and techniques to create these wooden bowls. Wood selection and mounting for grain orientation to get the most out of each piece will be discussed along with selection of proper tools. Students will turn a bowl using a tenon in a chuck system and Cole jaws to finish the bottom of the bowl. Students can choose to alternatively turn a heart vase. Students will turn a vase entirely on the lathe using the Michael Anderson method via multi-axes. This is a fun intermediate level process that involves spindle turning, face grain turning, drilling on the lathe, and a bit of ingrain hollowing at the top of the form. In the raised panel door class, Mike teaches the students how to design, measure, and size the door to match the opening of the cabinet. Once that is done, students then cut out all of the parts using the miter saw, table saw, and router table. Each student will make and take home a completed raised panel door.
