Lathe Tool Sharpening

Wednesday, September 10, 6 PM - 9 PM

Devon brings his knowledge of sharpening to this course that is a necessity for all turners. It covers the basics of grinders, grinding wheel selection and setup, various jigs and their applications, and specific techniques for sharpening scrapers, gouges and skews. Students will have a chance to work on their own tools during the practice session so bring all of your turning tools and learn how to sharpen them!

The Skew is a favorite tool for experienced turners, thanks to its effectiveness and versatility. However, it can be a tad scary to use, and does require some practice. So, learn from a Pro and take the class from Devon Palmer, to learn how to sharpen & set-up different types of Skews, learn how to make all seven (7) of the basic cuts as well as advanced techniques applicable to spindle and pen turning. You'll come away with familiarity with one of the most versatile tools in woodturning!

Explore woodturning with this introductory class to spindle turning. Learn how to use and sharpen basic woodturning tools: spindle gouges, roughing gouges, scrapers, parting tool and the skew. We'll cover basic safety, lathe setup, mounting/chucking of wood and basic cuts with each of the tools. We'll finish the day using the developed skills in turning and finishing a bottle stopper.

Intro To Bowl Turning

In this course, students will learn how to turn a small wooden bowl from green wood. They'll go through the process of selecting, preparing, and mounting the wood on the lathe, discuss tool selection/use and sharpening, shaping/turning of the outside/inside, sanding/finishing and drying of green wood.

This class is a great way for you to learn to make your own wooden inlay rings, using the lathe and your own scrap wood. Ring sizes are required upon signing up for the class so if the store doesn't have them we can get them ordered for you (if we have to order your size, make sure to allow time to come in)! The instructor will bring several types of inlay species to choose from, to make your ring unique! Each student will come away with some familiarity with using a mandrel and bushings on a lathe, as well as some basic jewelry inlay techniques, not to mention their own beautiful ring, and the knowledge to make more! Build a StewMac Acoustic Guitar Kit

Part 1: Saturday, September 20, 3 PM - 9 PM

Part 2: Sunday, September 21, 3 PM - 9 PM

In this two day, 12 hour total, weekend class, students will build their own guitar from a StewMac Guitar Kit (StewMac 16631 - Retail - $399.99) which is included in the cost of the class. This is an easier class than our normal Acoustic Building Class as more of the work is done for you so it is great for Teenagers and also Adults who are looking to build their first guitar. Passang Bhote is a talented Luthier and a patient instructor. He will walk you thru completing the kit. He will also explain the steps to put a finish on your guitar which you will do at home after the class.

Small Turning Projects - Lidded Box

This course is designed to expand the student's skill set through 2 useful projects: A Spin Top to demonstrate the use of the chatter tool and a Small Lidded Box to learn end grain hollowing, fitting lids/tenons, and chucking. These techniques will have wide application in your future woodturning projects.

Turned Hollow Forms

Sunday, September 28, 9 AM - 5 PM

This is a great class to learn basic end grain hollowing and hollow form design techniques. You will complete two projects: a small open end grain vase and a hollow enclosed vase with a small opening at the top of the piece. During the class, you will learn how to prep, mount, shape and finish your items. A class prerequisite is at least one full day turning class such as spindle or bowl turning.

Bandsaw Cutting Board Class

Learn all about the bandsaw and under the guidance of Passang Bhote, complete a cutting board using the bandsaw and other machines. Passang will go over the necessary steps to set up your bandsaw correctly and discuss the safety concerns using the machine.

Epoxy River Style Charcuterie Board

Have you been wanting to learn how to use epoxy? Have you been wanting to make a river table but don’t know where to start? Or, are you a foodie that wants to up your serving game? In this two-evening class you will be learning how to use epoxy, the importance of prep work when using epoxy, and having fun along the way. You will be making an 18” x 12” charcuterie board to take home and show off or give as a gift! You will be using a table saw, planer, router table, and sanders to accomplish this task. We can’t wait to have you in this class and teach you what you want to learn about epoxy. The instructor, Devon Palmer, will explain and demonstrate the entire process, then you'll get your chance to turn your own wand; it's a great beginner project, so NO experience is necessary! Rough To Ready/Cutting Board

Join Passang in this basic class which is a great hands-on introduction to most key woodworking tools - a must for all beginning woodworkers. Each student will receive a rough sawn board which they will proceed to mill (flatten, square, and cut) to a useful, final dimension to make a cutting board. The power tools you'll use in this class include the miter saw, band saw, table saw, jointer, and planer.

Woodturning Date Night With Devon Palmer

It's a Date! In this class, you and your partner will learn how to cut pen blanks, drill and mount the blanks on the lathe, turn the pen barrels and apply finish. Date Night Colored Pendant Necklace

You and your date will experience a fun, creative, hands-on woodturning evening where you will make and take home several very current and stylish lightweight wood pendant necklaces. Participants will make natural wood and student-designed colored wearables using artist colored pencils. The pendant hangs on a manufactured leather necklace. Neil Donovan’s unique and nationally recognized colored pencil technique will be utilized to ensure that each pendant will be successful and appear to have been purchased in a high-end gift shop. Topics will touch upon safety and basics, design and color theory and related finishing techniques. Neil Donovan has been turning and teaching woodworking for over 40 years. Making an Epoxy River Coffee Table

In this hands-on class, students will learn how to create a stunning epoxy river coffee table from start to finish. You'll explore woodworking techniques, tricks on what not to do, and mix and pour epoxy resin to craft a unique, functional piece of art. Whether you're a beginner or have some woodworking experience, this class will guide you through each step, allowing you to build a custom coffee table that adds a personal touch to any space! The slab species will be walnut, and the table will roughly come to 18”x31”x1.5” when finished. You will have the choice of epoxy color and what type of metal legs (hairpin, trapezoidal, square). The price includes all material and tools used. You will leave with a finished coffee table that you made from start to finish. When signing up please choose what leg type you would like so the instructor can get those for you prior to class.

Make a Shaker Style Side Table

In this two day class, students will make a Shaker Side Table from solid Cherry with instruction from Neil Donovan. Standing 29" inches tall and 21" x 21" wide this table is constructed using Kreg Pocket Hole Joinery and features tapered legs cut on the table saw using a jig. The Power Tools students will be using are the table saw, compound miter saw, jointer and drum sander. Finishing options will be discussed. A 10% discount is offered to students wishing to purchase finishing materials for their tables that they will complete at home.

The Table saw has been at the center of every workshop since its inception in the late 1700's. Join Passang to learn the basics of one of any woodshops most versatile machines. You'll be shown how to set up and maintain the machine, as well as how to make a variety of typical cuts, as we walk through making a picture frame you'll take home. This class is a perfect intro or refresher for the table saw - good for all experience levels.

Building An Electric Guitar

This is a great opportunity to make a Tele-Type Guitar for yourself or give the class as a gift for someone that loves to play guitars! This class is designed to accommodate the beginner/intermediate woodworker in building their own electric guitar learning basic woodworking techniques in the process. The process will be broken down in bite sized tasks that enable the student to get a clear understanding of the various steps in making an electric guitar. This is not a kit guitar! You are building it from scratch! You will learn how to make a body, hand carve a neck, install a truss rod and install the fret board after you install frets and slot a nut. Finally, you will learn how to wire it up (CTS Pots and Switchcraft Output Jack) and to properly setup a guitar to play perfectly for you. Each guitar will be completed before leaving the class, however, painting/finishing the guitar will be left to the student to complete after the class at home. Finishing techniques will be discussed to provide guidance and Ed will be available to answer questions after the class. After the parent turns the first Ornament, they can provide assistance/supervision for the turning of the second Ornament. Then final step will be assembling the Ornament. Each student will complete an Ornament during the class. All age ranges from 10 and up accepted. Couples can also sign up!

Explore woodturning with this introductory class to spindle turning. Learn how to use and sharpen basic woodturning tools: spindle gouges, roughing gouges, scrapers, parting tool and the skew. We'll cover basic safety, lathe setup, mounting/chucking of wood and basic cuts with each of the tools. We'll finish the day using the developed skills in turning and finishing a bottle stopper.

Lathe Tool Sharpening

Wednesday, January 21, 6 PM - 9 PM

Devon brings his knowledge of sharpening to this course that is a necessity for all turners. It covers the basics of grinders, grinding wheel selection and setup, various jigs and their applications, and specific techniques for sharpening scrapers, gouges and skews. Students will have a chance to work on their own tools during the practice session so bring all of your turning tools and learn how to sharpen them!

Focus On The Skew

Thursday, January 22, 6 PM - 9 PM

The Skew is a favorite tool for experienced turners, thanks to its effectiveness and versatility. However, it can be a tad scary to use, and does require some practice. So, learn from a Pro and take the class from Devon Palmer, to learn how to sharpen & set-up different types of Skews, learn how to make all seven (7) of the basic cuts as well as advanced techniques applicable to spindle and pen turning. Trust me....You'll come away with the comfort and knowledge to use one of the most versatile tools in woodturning!

Turned Hollow Forms

Saturday, January 24, 9 AM - 5 PM

This is a great class to learn basic end grain hollowing and hollow form design techniques. You will complete two projects: a small open end grain vase and a hollow enclosed vase with a small opening at the top of the piece. During the class, you will learn how to prep, mount, shape and finish your items. A class prerequisite is at least one full day turning class such as spindle or bowl turning.

Small Turning Projects - Lidded Box

Sunday, January 25, 9 AM - 5 PM

This course is designed to expand the student's skill set through 2 useful projects: A Spin Top to demonstrate the use of the chatter tool and a Small Lidded Box to learn end grain hollowing, fitting lids/tenons, and chucking. These techniques will have wide application in your future woodturning projects.
