Woodturning 101 - Amazing Apple Project

We will go over wood grain, density, moisture content, domestics vs. exotics, how to correctly prepare turning blanks, the various methods of mounting your work on the lathe, and much more. In the Afternoon Session – we will apply your morning skills to turn the Project for this Class. This class is a must to accelerate your skills for turning bowls, boxes, platters, and various woodturning projects. Pen Making Basics: Wood Pen

Turn a pen from exotic hardwoods! This class is an excellent way to get into woodworking and wood turning with hands-on shop experience on the lathe. Students will turn and construct a complete pen which they will take home!

Woodworking II (Fine Furniture Series): Dovetail Wall Cabinet

This is a 3-day in-depth follow-up to Woodworking I. Students will build on their skills learned in Woodworking I as they apply it to the basics of furniture-style case construction, frame and panel construction, and inset door construction of fine furniture. Other topics covered will include machine-cut dovetail joinery, additional power and hand tools, and ongoing shop safety. Precision design and construction techniques are also covered. Each student will use these newly acquired skills to build their very own beautiful solid wood wall cabinet. Class size is extremely limited, so please confirm your spot early!! Some explanations and pointers on finishing will be discussed in this class, but the final finish will be up to the student. Students wishing to learn more about finishing are encouraged to enroll in our informative "Finishing Basics" lecture class here in our Colorado Springs store. NOTE: All materials are included in the tuition, and each student will take home their wall cabinets. In advance of the class, students will need to choose from the following selection of wood, depending on availability at the time of the class: Alder Ash Beech Birch Cherry Mahogany Maple (Non-Figured) Maple (Ambrosia) Oak (Red or White) Sapele Walnut (Black or Peruvian- ask if available) ALL WOOD CHOICES ARE SUBJECT TO AVAILABILITY AT THE TIME OF CLASS. Cabinet Construction Series: The Fundamentals

This 2-day class is a hands-on introduction to cabinet construction. Students learn as they build a small-scale Face Frame Style cabinet suitable for the kitchen, other home areas or shop storage. There are many construction methods in cabinet-making, this class will focus on Face Frame construction. In this fundamentals class, we will focus on table saw work for dado joinery of the carcass; and stile and rail construction of a flat panel door with European hinges. There is no pre-requisite.

Applied Finishing

Part 1: Monday, April 27, 2026, 10 AM - 4 PM

Part 2: Tuesday, April 28, 2026, 10 AM - 1 PM

This is a hands-on applied finishing class in which students will brush or wipe-on an oil or water-based finish to one small unfinished wood project which they will bring to class. Spray system applications will not be covered in this class. Day 1 will begin with a discussion on many common finishing products, including water and oil-based finishes, lacquers, gels, waxes, shellacs, their solvents and thinners, compatibility issues, and wood preparation, sealing, and conditioning to obtain the best overall result. Students will learn the strengths and weaknesses of a wide variety of finishes, how to prep their wood for each, how each is applied, how they differ from each other, and how to choose the best finish for each particular project. We will also discuss water-based, oil-based, and alcohol-based dyes and stains, although students may not have time to dye or stain in class. Epoxies and high odor products (such as lacquers) will not be applied. By the end of Day 1, students will brush or wipe-on their first coat of either an oil-based or water-based clear finish to a small bare wood project which they bring to class. (Discounted pricing will be offered should students wish to purchase supplies during the class.) Projects will dry overnight, ready for second-coat prep on Day 2. Due to time, students will not apply all coats of finish on their project; but rather they will be armed with the knowledge and practical experience to apply their remaining coats of finish at home. This class is open to everyone wishing to gain fundamental knowledge and finishing experience for a hand-rubbed / hand-applied topcoat. It is the perfect follow-up to any of the Woodworking I, II, III, or IV classes, our box-making classes, hand tool mastery, charcuterie board, or any other furniture and small project class or small unfinished project brought from home!

Wood Selection And Stock Preparation

Wood selection, layout, and stock preparation is key to any successful woodworking project. We will break it down for you in this interactive class. Students will have hands-on practical experience choosing the proper wood, allowing for expansion and contraction, calculating board footage, considering grain direction, knots, and other considerations, and accounting for fundamental characteristics of both lumber and man-made materials such as MDF and plywood. Using a combination of hand and power tools, students will take a board from its rough form to material that is straight, flat, square, and ready for use. Whether you have hand tools or power tools in your shop, we will learn the techniques to prep stock both ways. Students will be exposed to a wide variety of tools and machinery, to include the table saw, bandsaw, planer, jointer, drum sander, and hand planes, and marking tools. Tuition includes all materials. This class is open to any and all students and skill levels. It is a recommended (but not required) companion to many of our other classes, including our fine furniture series (Woodworking I, II, III, and IV), all Small Project Series classes (Charcuterie, box-making, etc.), and any class or project involving solid stock.

Power Tool Fundamentals: Router

Maximizing Your Bandsaw

Join Alex Snodgrass, the leading authority on bandsaws, for an in-depth seminar on unlocking the full potential of your bandsaw. Participants will learn how to fine tune a bandsaw for smoother cuts and greater accuracy. He will also demonstrate how Carter Products accessories extend the tool's range. Guides, Mag Fence, blades, inserts and a circle cutter will be highlighted for their role in precise and efficient work. Build a Pin Box & Two-Drawer Wave box

Renowned bandsaw master Alex Snodgrass will lead a hands-on class devoted to building two striking projects: a four-drawer pin box and a two-drawer wave box. Instruction covers setup, cutting techniques and safe shaping methods while Alex guides participants step by step and answers questions throughout the process. He also reveals the secrets behind his signature designs, including magnetic boxes, push button boxes, the gravity pin box and an articulated snake. Computer Numeric Control (CNC) technology offers woodworkers far greater accuracy and repeatability for many types of router and power carving projects. Professionals and hobbyists alike can create custom multiples of most anything faster and more accurately than any project fabricated manually. In this first class of our CNC series, students will learn how versatile CNC machines can be as Bob teaches students Vectric's software related to our in-store CNC units, and the variety of file types which may be imported, graphics compatibility, post processing cut paths, what materials are best to cut, and what shapes and styles may be fabricated. Materials may range from woods, plastics, MDF, soft non-ferrous metals, and solid surfacing materials. In this class, Bob will demonstrate a variety of techniques and projects which are useful to a range of woodworking specialties. Possible projects may include relief projects such as rosettes and other furniture or architectural embellishments, matching period pieces for restoration work, plaques, puzzles, labyrinths, intarsia pieces, boxes, RC craft pieces, bowls, home accessories such as Christmas tree ornaments and kitchen items, business branding and marketing collateral, and much more! NOTE: Students must please PRE-LOAD their laptop IN ADVANCE OF CLASS with either the demo or paid version of Vectric software (either the Desktop, Pro, or Aspire version).

Small Box Series: Dovetail Box Using A Router And Dovetail Jig

This class will take you into the world of small box making with power tools. Small boxes can be very simple to extremely elegant, from a simple recipe caddy to an intricate heirloom treasury. Once you learn the fundamental techniques and how to use the dovetail jig, you can make just about any style in any size for any purpose which your dovetail jig accommodates. Students will focus on the half-blind dovetail in this class, with a raised panel lid and contrasting woods. Other variations will also be discussed. Your instructor will provide a variety of beautiful woods from which you will choose for your in-class project. Species for each class will be subject to availability at the time of class. At the end of Day 2, each student will take home a box of their own. Time permitting, application of a finish will be discussed, but final finishing will be up to the student. Students wishing to learn about finishing in-depth should enroll in our Applied Finishing class, and bring their bare wood boxes to learn all about finishing and apply finish during that class.

This is a great opportunity to make a 3D cutting board using Alex Snodgrass's method. Using only three different woods - maple, cherry, and Peruvian walnut - Barry will show each student how to make a stunning 3D end-grain cutting board. He will begin by teaching each student how to tune a bandsaw to make perfect cuts. Students will then progress through techniques required to build a cutting board: how to make dead-on straight cuts and accurate angled cuts on the bandsaw, and how to plane, sand, glue, and clamp the cutting board. Topics to be covered include: bandsaw myths debunked, bandsaw mechanics, correct blade tension, accurate angle cuts, gluing techniques, end-grain pattern alignment, food-safe finishes, and care and maintenance of cutting boards. By the end of the day, each student will have a fantastic 3D cutting board made with their own hands! This class is designed for woodworkers of all skill levels. Woodturning 101 is a Class Prerequisite - In the first 30 minutes - Raleigh Lockhart will begin the class with a brief refresher of the A, B, C and D’s of Woodturning – Focusing on the Foundation of Woodturning and Shop Safety. The balance of the day – it’s ALL about the featured Class Project! This is a hands-on class so if you have woodturning tools, bring them so you can sharpen and use them in for the class! You will learn Wood and Tool selection to turn your beautiful project.
