Turning Thin Stock - Alternative Mounting

Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep. Often the sawmills will cut their best highly figured pieces thin for the cabinet and furniture makers. Thin material can be turned successfully. Learn mounting techniques that will enable you to turn an odd shaped blank or platter from stock without sacrificing your prime wood in the process of making the tenon. This class will give you inspiring ideas for developing your own woodturning style. Come join Dave and turn a Wooden Platter. THE BASIC BOWL – FROM TREE TO TABLE.

This class will cover the basic steps required and answer your questions as you turn your first bowl. Do I want to turn green wood or dry blanks? I don't live on a farm, where do I find the logs to make green blanks? I found someone who wants a tree cut up, what's the best way to cut and store the logs? Where do I find dry blanks? Do they turn different than green blanks? Do I want to use conventional or carbide tools? We will spend the first part of the class discussing these issues as well as any others that you may have – Dave will explain the various choices and alternatives as well as demonstrate the basic mounts and steps involved in making a bowl. Late morning each student will have an opportunity to practice each tool on the practice blank Dave has mounted. Then each student will take a blank (using carbide tools) "from the tree to the table." A 10% discount will be granted to each student on most hand and lathe tools and accessories the day of the class.

Epoxy & Wood Charcuterie Board

Using resins and epoxies can help create beautiful projects, but which resin or epoxy is right for the job? Do I use a urethane resin or do I use an epoxy? (Wait, there’s a difference?!) How deep can I pour my resin or epoxy? What happens if I don’t mix using the correct ratio of resin/epoxy to hardener? How much do I pour? These are all questions (and then some) that will be answered during this class. In this two day class, we will be using the Jess Crow HDPE Reusable Forms to create a hybrid wood and epoxy cutting (or charcuterie) board. Day one will consist of a discussion about resin or epoxy and by the end of day one, students will pour TotalBoat ThickSet epoxy into an HDPE form that will become their own creation that they take home after day two. On day two (one week later), students will work with their demolded creations to flatten them and turn them into beautiful cutting boards or charcuterie boards that they will finish (during the class) and take home.

Why are hand planes so expensive? Why can’t I get thin curling shavings like the YouTubers I watch? What do I do with this old plane my grandfather left me? Do I need a hand plane in this tech friendly new world? In this class you will learn the answers to these questions and more, including plane setup, tuning, maintenance, sharpening, selection, and use. This beginner friendly class will take you through the different kinds of hand planes and allow you to get some hands on experience. Students are encouraged to bring their own planes to setup and tune, but planes will be provided for those still deciding to buy. Tuition includes the book "Getting Started with Hand Planes" by Scott Wynn for you to keep and continue your education.

Hand Saw Basics

If you’re interested in hand tools and hand cut joinery, this series is for you! Take one or all, at your own pace and in your own order. Starting with the basics, this class will teach proper handsaw use and care. We will run through drills and warm ups used to insure you get a good straight cut when you are making your joints. This half day class is a prerequisite for all the Intermediate level joinery classes, but can also be taken on its own to provide you with a solid background in any cutting by hand, from felling trees to flush cutting dowels. Tuition includes a gents handle dovetail saw that will be used in class and will make a good starting point for any beginner hand saw aficionado.

In this informative class, we will take you from start to finish and help you get the most from your router. Routers will be provided, however you may bring your own subject to the instructors evaluation of it's safe operation. Intarsia Basics

Intarsia is a scrollsaw technique whereby you cut different species of wood into varied shapes to create a mosaic like picture. Each piece is sanded and formed to give the appearance of depth. Segmentation offers all of the same cutting and shaping skills of intarsia, but uses only one species of wood which is then stained or painted to achieve the colors you desire. In this class you will be doing segmentation to acquire the cutting and shaping skills needed for intarsia. When you are finished with this class you will have a better understanding of the skills needed to do an intarsia piece.

Woodworking Machine Fundamentals / Charcuterie Board

Bowl Turning, Beyond The Basics- Using Traditional HSS Tools

If you have mastered basic bowl turning and/or are not satisfied with the results you are getting from carbide tools and want to jump to the next level, then this is the class for you. In this class we will cover the use of various traditional tool techniques to achieve the best possible finish on your bowl prior to sanding using both carbide and conventional scrapers and gouges. Dave will also show you a few "tricks" and techniques to enhance the quality of troublesome soft/punky wood and reduce tare-out and enhance sanding. We will also cover the basics of sharpening both gouges and scrapers - sharp tools are essential for a quality finish. Four Step Cabinet Making.

The furniture that the Shakers built is making an amazing comeback., but what if your skills need polishing in order to join the furniture revolution? This four step classes will take you through the woodworking process. STEP ONE: Material prep will utilize the jointer, planer, table saw, chop saw as well as hand planes. STEP TWO: This step will be in Carcass construction, both traditional and modern carcass making techniques will be demonstrated and used I order to construct the cabinet carcass. Included will be dovetailing. STEP THREE: When most non-woodworkers look at a cabinet, all they see are the doors and drawers. Students will cut a door panel as well as rails and stiles using a router table. STEP FOUR: Making the drawer. Drawers are the most abused form of woodworking. Nothing will undergo the constant open and shut problems that they have to endure. This final Step will teach the student how to properly construct and install the drawer for your cabinet. If you are interested in beginning woodworking or honing your existing skills, then this is the class for you. This two day class will teach you how to cast pen or project blanks with Alumilite Clear Slow resin. Spend two days with Robert as he guides you through the resin casting process and answers any questions you have pertaining to the casting process. Day one will start with an explanation and demo of the resin casting process. Robert will walk you through the tools and equipment needed as well as talk about the nuances of resin casting, giving tips and tricks along the way. Finish day one by casting your very own project blanks that you will take home on the second day. On day two, Robert will walk you through how to prepare, turn, and finish a blank made from the same Alumilite Clear Slow resin (not the blank cast on day one). While the resin will be set and able to be handled, Alumilite Clear Slow takes a week to fully cure. The blank you turn will dress a Wall Street II pen, vegetable peeler, or coffee scoop (turner's choice). Students will leave the class with a project blank or two, and a completed turned project.

If you are a new turner or considering the purchase of a lathe or trying your hand at turning, this class will help you get started in the right direction. The first in a series by Dave Sanborn designed specifically for the new or prospective turners; this class will cover basic features and options available for the lathe itself as well as available accessories and tools. In the morning, Dave will demonstrate and discuss the basics of Conventional and Carbide tools; Spindle, Bowl, and Pen turning; and various accessories. This class will cover the basic steps required and answer your questions as you turn your first bowl. Do I want to turn green wood or dry blanks? I don't live on a farm, where do I find the logs to make green blanks? I found someone who wants a tree cut up, what's the best way to cut and store the logs? Where do I find dry blanks? Do they turn different than green blanks? Do I want to use conventional or carbide tools? We will spend the first part of the class discussing these issues as well as any others that you may have – Dave will explain the various choices and alternatives as well as demonstrate the basic mounts and steps involved in making a bowl. Late morning each student will have an opportunity to practice each tool on the practice blank Dave has mounted. Then each student will take a blank (using carbide tools) "from the tree to the table." A 10% discount will be granted to each student on most hand and lathe tools and accessories the day of the class.

Each class seat covers tuition for 2 people, as well as materials for 2 charcuterie boards and 2 cheese spreaders that you will finish and take home at the end of the class.

Hand Saw Basics

If you’re interested in hand tools and hand cut joinery, this series is for you! Take one or all, at your own pace and in your own order. Starting with the basics, this class will teach proper handsaw use and care. We will run through drills and warm ups used to insure you get a good straight cut when you are making your joints. This half day class is a prerequisite for all the Intermediate level joinery classes, but can also be taken on its own to provide you with a solid background in any cutting by hand, from felling trees to flush cutting dowels. Tuition includes a gents handle dovetail saw that will be used in class and will make a good starting point for any beginner hand saw aficionado.

If you’re interested in hand tools and hand cut joinery, this series is for you! Take one or all, at your own pace and in your own order. The most popular and strongest of the hand cut joints, the dovetail is considered by many to be the ultimate show of precision, strength, and artistry. In this class we will be focusing on the origins of the dovetail, when it was used on a daily basis because of its strength instead of its appearance. In one night you will learn layout, precise measurements, cut matching pins and tails, and at the end of the day have a functional dovetail joint cut by hand.

Bandsaw Kitchen Utensils & Holder Class

Create a set of three custom wooden kitchen utensils along with a matching utensil holder, all using the bandsaw. This class will guide you through shaping functional, food-safe utensils while developing control and confidence with curved cuts and smooth transitions. You’ll also build a utensil holder based on bandsaw box techniques— featuring a hollowed interior and a sculpted exterior design. Along the way, students will learn essential skills including safe bandsaw operation, internal cutting techniques, shaping, and basic finishing. This is a great class for anyone looking to expand their bandsaw skills while creating practical, handcrafted items for the kitchen.

Pyrography (Wooddburning) Advanced

You'll be making a functional mallet by using and getting acquainted with all the major tools- bandsaw, router table, table saw, jointer, planer, sander, and miter saw. While you'll make a functional tool to add to or start your workshop, the emphasis of the day is safety and getting comfortable using large power tools.
