Description: Our Box Craftsman, Mark Seay, has come up with a wonderful new Box Class. This Designer Raised Panel Jewelry Box will test your skills and have you making some very unique cuts on both the table saw and the router table. Students will make a mid-size Jewelry Box, from two different contrasting woods, that is the perfect size for the dresser, bathroom vanity or even on display in a book shelf. You will learn how to raise a panel for the top of the box, cut perfect mitered corners with a contrasting spline joint and layout and cut perfect mortises for fitting the lid hinges. Mark will discuss your options for finishing both the inside and outside of your box, at home, including how to use Suede-Tex Flocking for that perfect inside look. Tools Required: Bench Chisels (1/4", 3/8", 1/2"), Bench Or Carvers Mallet/Hammer, Cabinet Scraper Hand Held Blade, Smoothing Or Block Plane, Traditional Dovetail Saw (Not Japanese Style).
Description: HANDS-ON. Chisels, scrapers, planes and saws are the most fundamental woodworking tools in the shop. Howard will provide hands-on instruction on how to sharpen, adjust and use each of these great tools. Students will practice "old world" basic exercises with each tool. Tool #1: Learn basic chisel techniques and how to cut a mortise for a hinge faster than any machine takes to set up. Tool #2: Learn how to use a cabinet scraper as a step toward applying a fine finish. Tool #3: Learn how great using a hand plane can be. Plane an edge straight, flatten a board and cut chamfers with ease. Tool #4: Sharpen and reset your dovetail saw so it cuts perfectly. Description: HANDS-ON. The Basic Lathe Class has gotten a face lift with two new teachers. Our two lathe experts, Paul DeMars and Chuck Silber, will co-teach this dynamic and fundamental, "3-session", class for all beginning turners. Session #1: Spindle Turning. This class is geared to help you get started on the lathe. Tool selection, handling, safety and machine basics will be covered. You will learn how to make cuts to produce beads, coves and other basic spindle shapes. Session #2: Bowl Turning/Face Grain. Perfect your basic skills by learning to turn a wooden bowl. Face plate turning, tool selection, techniques, sanding and finishing will be covered. Session #3: Bowl Turning/End- Grain. Learn to turn another style of bowl by it's end-grain. End-grain bowls are very different than face-grain bowls and will allow you to expand your turning skills. We have a new advanced class inwhich each student will build a massive 42"x 36"x 24" cabinet from both top quality Oak plywood and Oak hardwood...that will match the design and look of your already built Old World Hand Tool Cabinet Upper Unit. This Hand Tool Cabinet Lower Base Unit is the traditional Old World size to allow the Upper Cabinet to be attached on top. This stacked Unit will then provide your work shop with the ultimate Hand Tool storage! The Lower Base Unit will have six adjustable size cubbies that will easily hold your power drills, saws and pad sanders. There will be five drawers designed to hold all your small hand tools. As an added bonus the two 4" deep cabinet doors will provide a great storage space for Hand Saws and Straight Edges.The THURSDAY & FRIDAY NIGHTS will include layout, rough plywood and hardwood cutting. Tools Required: Bench Chisels (1/4", 3/8", 1/2"), Bench Or Carvers Mallet/Hammer, Cabinet Scraper Hand Held Blade, Smoothing Or Block Plane, Traditional Dovetail Saw (Not Japanese Style).
Description: HANDS-ON. Chisels, scrapers, planes and saws are the most fundamental woodworking tools in the shop. Howard will provide hands-on instruction on how to sharpen, adjust and use each of these great tools. Students will practice "old world" basic exercises with each tool. Tool #1: Learn basic chisel techniques and how to cut a mortise for a hinge faster than any machine takes to set up. Tool #2: Learn how to use a cabinet scraper as a step toward applying a fine finish. Tool #3: Learn how great using a hand plane can be. Plane an edge straight, flatten a board and cut chamfers with ease. Tool #4: Sharpen and reset your dovetail saw so it cuts perfectly. Learn simple exercises that will give you great confidence with your saw. This is a wonderful hands-on class that anyone interested in hand tools will enjoy. Description: HANDS-ON. The hand plane is the "violin" of hand tools. It is a humble tool that can be used in the shaping and smoothing of almost every project you build. Howard will provide hands-on instruction as each student builds a Krenov-style wooden smoothing plane using a variety of hardwoods and a top-of-the-line Hock plane blade kit. This smoothing plane will cut beautifully and be a treasured lifetime tool. You will even make a small blade setting hammer. Description: HANDS-ON. The dovetail joint stands as the symbol of hand tool craftsmanship and for many is regarded as the most challenging test of their skills. Students will learn simple exercises that will give them great confidence with basic hand tools. Howard will provide personal attention and hands-on practice for everyone to learn the layout, sawing, chiseling and assembling of the joint.
