Straight Grinding Jig
The Veritas® Grinding Jig solidly clamps and perfectly aligns the tool to be sharpened with its alignment pin system. It slides back and forth across the tool rest groove on the Veritas® Grinder Tool Rest, but it also has riding ledges which allow it to be used with other tool rests....
- Use on 6" and 8" grinders and belt sanders
- Also works with other tool rests
I bought the Veritas tool rest to machine new bevels on my straight chisels and plane blades. This jig makes straight grinding a breeze. Easy to set up and it slides from side to side with ease.
Not for Most Chisels
If you are planning on using this guide to sharpen most of your chisels you might think again. There is a description for sharpening Japanese or western butt chisels on their website & in the instructions. However there is no clear description as to its set up to do so. All of my attempts at different combinations have concluded that there is no way to do this and use the controls built into the system. Basically you cannot use the bar that fits into the slot in the companion tool rest. Other combinations cause the jig to bind or jump the intended path that is the idea behind this jig in the 1st place. I have contacted Lee Valley and they had no immediate answer. I am now waiting for the designer to call me with a solution. Keep in mind their honing guide has some of the same issues with short or US chisels. You may also encounter problems with some block plane and cabinet plan irons as they can be too short to use the square registration system. A fresh look at the design could make this jig a very useful as well as universal tool.
