It’s the time of year when the air turns crisp and the colors abound in nature to inspire ideas as the holiday spirit starts to come alive with creativity in woodshops everywhere. When we think of Autumn, the aromatic flavors of fall fill the air with pumpkin pies, apple desserts, canning for the upcoming winter months, kids playing in leaf piles, bonfires and sawdust! Fall festivals with homemade goods featuring crafts and hot apple cider begin to pop up in many communities. Many types of woodworking projects can also be found, like these pumpkin creations by woodworker, turner and carver, Rex Kenyon. We asked Rex to create two different style pumpkins, one for Halloween and one for Thanksgiving, and here is what he came up with. You’ve got to take a serious close-up look at these pumpkins shown left to determine if they indeed are fruit or wood! How did Rex make these come to life? Let’s find out!
As Americans approach another Veterans Day, Woodcraft will sponsor its 11th anniversary Turn for Troops National Turn-a-Thon the weekend of Nov. 7-8. Please check with your local store schedules for participation, as each store may offer different dates and times. Some stores are offering this during the week before Veterans Day Weekend, and some the following weekend. Pens crafted during this event will be sent to military personnel serving overseas and those in rehabilitation centers. If you wish to join in, please contact the nearest Woodcraft store for your local turn-a-thon details.
If you haven’t heard of woodworker Jory Brigham, don’t worry – you will. The California free-spirited family man designs and handcrafts unique furniture using mostly domestic hardwoods and time-honored techniques in his Paso Robles studio, overlooking the vineyards in wine country. Sorby Turning Set
I think this is a good intermediate set. I am still amazed that the description says rectangular skew but the picture shows an oval. It has been this way for I think years. I think this kind of goof that goes uncorrected tends to reduce Sorby's credibility unfortunately.
I had been turning wood about 6 months when I decided to upgrade my tools. I bought this set and have never looked back. These tools immediately improved my creativity and the finished product. I primarily turn pens. These tools are balanced and hold a sharp edge.
Great tools for a great price
These tools are a great set for all around woodturning whether you want to turn bowls, spindles or anything in between these tools are amazing. The only thing that I didn't really expect was for the tools to come in a cardboard box, but I didn't mind because I was going to hang them on the wall anyway.
Excellent Turning Tools for the Money
I am a wood turner and really enjoy this set of Sorby tools. Great feel and control. They hold their edge very well.
Exactly what I expected.
Although I am just getting started in woodturning, I have learned over the years that quality tools are worth their cost in the long run. Given the Robert Sorby reputation I was somewhat surprised that the set is in a cardboard box instead of a wooden one as some less expensive sets are. This is no big deal as I will probably make a wall rack for them anyway. This is a nice set and includes all the tools necessary to get started in turning. They do need to be sharpened before first use, but from my research I understand that this is standard procedure for all brands of turning tools.
they look good and work great
Gift for dad
For the quality, price and being a good starter kit you can't go wrong. My first bowl from this set of tools had a better finish with less sanding than the chump China made tools that came with the Jet 1236.
