Inexpensive way to turn a shop vac into a dust collector
Writing this review after using this product for many years now, so I have plenty of experience with how this separator lid operates. I use this separator with a shop vac and a 5 gallon bucket attached (with rope) on a cart, so that I can roll it around my garage. This is a very inexpensive solution, so it requires some operator "know-how". From reading the older reviews, I am both surprised and dismayed by the operator errors; as such, I feel obligated to refute some of the issues cited: 1) Yes, you need a coupling to fit your 2.5" shop vac hose or other 2.5" fitting to the separator lid's 2.5" fitting. A coupling is not a fitting, it is larger than the fitting so that it "couples" two fittings together. Your shop vac hose also has a coupling, but it's on the other end of the hose so that "fits" into your shop vac. 2) Yes, it stops collecting chips when the bucket is full! To solve this issue, a) turn off the shop vac, b) remove the bucket, b) empty the bucket (somewhere other than your shop floor), c) reconnect the bucket, and d) turn on the shop vac. 3) Yes, the lid will pop off if you connect it to a blower. It is designed to be connected to a suction device, like a shop vac. If this is a pretty severe issue for you, try tying the lid down with a bit of rope and a proper knot. Actually, this is how I keep my bucket with lid on my roll-around cart; it works with my planer and jointer. 4) If bucket is not collecting any chips and the shop vac is collecting everything, then you have connected the shop vac to the port with the elbow. The shop vac should connect to the port with no elbow. 5) If the bucket is collecting some, but not most, of the chips, then the elbow (where the chips exit into the bucket) needs to be turned so that the chips hit the side of the bucket first, slowing them down and making them fall into the bottom. If the elbow is pointed right at the inlet port to the shop vac, then the suction from your shop vac can grab the chips before they can slow down. These issues are not the fault of an inexpensive tool, they are the fault of an inexperienced operator who aught to know better. But now you know, and knowledge is power!

Great product
I bought this separator many years ago and have loved the performance since day one. I bought a hose and fitting kit and it has work flawlessly. I only wish I could find a clear plastic bucket.

DO NOT BUY THIS!
I bought one of these recently because it was on sale and cost considerably less than "real" cyclone separators. IT WAS A BIG MISTAKE. Once this collector is full, all of the wood chips and sawdust flow into my shop-vac, filling both until there is no suction at all. I regret wasting my money; I wish I had waited until I could have purchased a better dust collector. Not what I expect from Woodcraft!

Works well with one exception
This works great when used with a vacuum. Features I love - low profile, so it's easy to fit under a table, and I do like that it useful that it does snap tight as that makes it easier to empty (in this instance, the vacuum creates a seal and the top stays in place). However, there is one instance in which this is pretty severe issue - when connected to a tool with a blower. I tried to connect it to a Dewalt planar and the top simply flew off the 5 gallon bucket. Even with a couple strong bungee cords, it wouldn't stay in place. Wish there was were latches on the side that could be optionally engaged snapped onto the bucket to keep this from happening. That would make this far more versatile. Otherwise, nice cyclone at an excellent price point.

Pleasantly surprised
After reading all the reviews I was a little hesitant. I picked it up because for about the same price of the collector I got free shipping. The connections are not standard size to have a shop vac hose hook up to it easily. I have run about 10 gallons of saw dust from a sander and a table saw and have not had to empty or clean the filter in my shop vac. I turned the elbow piece in the bucket towards the side so it immediately slows down all the particles as they come into the bucket.

It is always something
I have bought several of this type of Dust Collector over the years, they all work good, but you would think that they would make it the correct size for the normal shop vac hose or supply an adaptor to fit most hoses.
-
Great, once you get the hoses attached
My primary use for my shop vac is to clean up around my wood lathe. The separator worked exactly like it is supposed to. That is, after I got the hoses connected to it. I took the advise of another reviewer and got a couple of 2" no hub connectors from the plumbing department and they worked perfectly.

I would not buy this product again
Purchased the unit few months ago. I have had a very difficult time finding hoses that match the unit. I have a shop vac and the hose can not fit this product, even though the site notes it will fit 2.5" hoses. The Store is proposing I should jerry rig something to make it work or buy $8 fittings so the hoses would work!!

Total Waste of Time and Money
Normal shop vac hoses don't fit, had to buy two hubless adapters, $10.00 to make it fit the hoses. Then I started using it with my Ridgid 6 hp shop vac. It did not catch anything, all dust and debris continued on into the shop vac and started to clog the vac's filter. I bought to use with my chop saw and my table saw and general shop cleaning. It does not meet my expectations in any way. I built a rack to attach it to my shop vac for easier maneuverability, wast of time and materials. Bad Product.

serves my purpose
The product worked as I expected by removing large items from the vacuum stream. I had to find adapters to attach the hoses which added expense and time.

Needed to change the design a little
I purchased this product so i can put it inline between my wood working tools and my 12 gallon shop vac. After my first use, I open the 5 gallon bucket only to find it has been completely sucked cleaned by the shop vac. I tweaked it a little by dropping a 2.5" dust collection hose to the bottom of the bucket and filling water above the pipe line. It has essentially became a water trap and besides cleaning a messy 5 gallon bucket, the shop vac has very minimal dust.

Works fine
It works fine - you just need to get the right size hoses to fit it. The standard hoses on my Shop Vac didn't fit it. But after I got the right hoses it worked fine.
-
works like expected
use for the miter saw and the table saw
-
works perfectly
I make rustic picture frames, this makes it so much easier, small and compact for I am limited on space

Works good, but ...
I have a Fein vacuum which I bought for its low noise. It is 2-1/4" diameter, so Duct Tape is a must for connections. The clear flexible hose I ordered is difficult to install, but eventually goes on and holds tight. The main problem is that the 9ft clear hose accordions to 3ft under suction from small nozzles and resists stretching. Use another type if that is a problem.
-
Didn't work for me
Maybe it's just not designed to work with a higher power vac, but 90% of chips and dust end up in my vac clogging up the filter every few minutes. If the thing was designed for low power systems, it should say so in the product description.

Works great for what it is
I read the reviews about the inlet and outlet ports being the same size as a standard shopvac hose. I have other tools that have the same problem. My solution is to go to the local home improvement store plumbing department to purchase 2" no hub couplers. The rubber fits tightly around both the inlet and the hose then the included clamps hold the two pieces together securely with no air leaks. I was a little concerned that the gasket material would leak air, but when I placed it on the bucket and turned on the vacuum the lid seated and I could not pull it off until the vacuum was turned off. For an inexpensive cyclone attachment to a standard shopvac this works great.
-
Now what?
Standard shop vac hoses do not attach, as they are the same size as the inlets. No instructions to give any idea for a coupler, and standard couplers do not work. So where do I go from here, I don't want to resort to duct tape.
-
Works great.
Allows only dust into the vacumn, no large chips.a
-
Not for me
Did not work for me. but it might just be me.
-
Great product for a woodshop
I use it to clean up my woodshop. Performs very well.

Portable dust collection made easy
Overall, very good product. It does reduce the vacuum's power, but with shorter hoses it is minor. Shorter hoses make it less of a hassle to set up, use, and move. I use it for portable dust collection on a table saw, reducing broom time. Full size version works great with dust collection system, but this is good with a shop vac.
