    parts problem

Nice looking drill press unfortunately it came with 2 important parts - the lock handles - that made the unit unusable. Contacted customer no service who lived up to their name. I tried replacement parts who said the parts were obsolete. Needless to say I'm not overly enthusiastic with Jet.

    Well-made Drill Press

The JWDP Drill Press is well-made and nicely executed. The assembly is straight forward and the assembly instructions are good. The only downside of the tool is the T-Slots in the table which Technical Support at JET admits are non-standard and "users must get "creative to bolt-down something to the table". Translation: you cannot buy from JET or anyone else T-slot nuts that will fit the table. Standard T-slot nuts are way too long and thick to drop into the wells at the ends of the slots. However, I came across "Quarter Turn" T-slot nuts that drop in from the top of the slot instead of from the end. These work GREAT! Even though the slots in the table are 5/8" wide, you must purchase the Quarter Turn nuts that are for 1/2" wide slots and have a 3/8-16 thread. This is because the slot is only .250 inch thick and the 5/8" wide nuts are approximately .280 thick. However, the 1/2 wide nuts work just fine since you are locking only on the "ears" of the nut. McMaster-Carr sells these Quarter Turn T-Slot nuts. The part no. is 90799A112 and they are approx. $3.00 each.

Great drill press for the price and size.

My recent experience with drill presses is a 40 year old Craftsman that is still rock solid and strait as a arrow but is 40 years old and difficult to change the speed via belts and pullies and parts are no longer available. The second is a benchtop model that is just crap. When the Jet was put on sale I decided to take the plunge and after using it for a two weeks am very pleased with it. It went together easily. All parts fit and didn't need any forcing or persuading. The instructions suggest that two people lift the mechanism onto the stand but I managed to do it easily enough by myself. The quill went right in with no problems. It sits solidly on a Grizzly mobile table. There is a small clip on the side for the chuck key which I appreciate after never having one. Once assembled I used a paddle bit, a forstner bit and metal and wood drills to try different materials. The depth adjustment/stop works easily and is accurate. The laser was spot on out of the box. Changing speeds on the fly with the speed indicated on the LED readout was another welcome change. Holes were straight and accurate. The only issues I have is the quality of the plastic balls on the arms and the crank handle that raises and lowers the table. The crank screams it is light duty and it is going to break at some point. Jet could have spend another dollar or two and improved it. Given my space limitations, the quality vs cost of this drill press and its ease of assembly I'm pleased. It seems a great value and is working well.

Some quality control issues, but seems to function properly

The base wobbles a bit, but was easily shimmed. I can forgive that. Something that was a bit more frustrating was that the factory forgot to thread the hole where the lock handle attaches to the table pivot. I had to tap it myself with an M10x1.5. Not a huge deal, it took 2 minutes, but not confidence inspiring. The press seems to function fine, but at the moment I only have initial impressions.
