Butz knife, sharp or not sharp?

I purchased one of these last year and like others I assumed the knife would be sharp. I have previously purchased Flex Cut knives and found them to be sharp out of the box. Reading the description and details on this knife on this site I see that there is an option to have the knife sharpened at a reasonable price. In addition, under the details link there are instructions on how to sharpen the knife.

Agree with comments, still love it

I agree with the comments of other reviewers - this knife does require a little TLC from the start. It is sharp, but not quite ready for detail work. You need to hone it and get the edge to the razor or "scary sharp" level. I found this a little challenging, but once done, this knife has been my favorite for detail work. It has a nice balance and comfortable feel in the hand, and the blade keeps sharp longer than some of my other knives. I've found that, after some stropping with leather, if I place "yellow" compound over some thin cotton webbing material (like the stuff used in re-upholstery), and then give it some very light strokes, it gets an even sharper edge.

      ok, for the price

Bought this on sale, so I added the sharpening to save time. Was not close to being sharp plus blade was loose. After some work, it's an ok general purpose whittling knife.

      Buy this presharpened!!!

I bought 2 of these. Thought I ordered detail knife and roughing knife. Received 2 roughing knives..Ordered without sharpening, big mistake! Handles are quite comfortable but one blade defective (high and low spots and initial grinding quite uneven). Other one (same knife) I was able to sharpen .

      It's great

It is good for small hands. The short blade doesn't get in the way of your carving projects.

      Alright

Alright for an entry level carving knife. Nothing special. I had a hard time getting/keeping edge. I am an experienced woodworker.

      Excellent tool

Love the knife --- everything I thought it would be. Just wish it had come with a hard case to protect the blade.

      Wonderful!!

I have been carving with this knife for 15 years now, and I Love it! I have tried other, more expensive knives, but this is the perfect size and shape. Many of the other knives are just too large and bulky for the smaller hands of a woman. It is very comfortable to use, the blade stays sharp and its obviously well built as I have been using the Same knife for 15 years. I Highly recommend this knife!
