Small Box Series: Dovetail Box Using A Router And Dovetail Jig

Part 1: Sunday, June 1, 9:30 AM - 5 PM

Part 2: Sunday, June 8, 9:30 AM - 5 PM

This class will take you into the world of small box making with power tools. Small boxes can be very simple to extremely elegant, from a simple recipe caddy to an intricate heirloom treasury. Once you learn the fundamental techniques and how to use the dovetail jig, you can make just about any style in any size for any purpose which your dovetail jig accommodates. Students will focus on the half-blind dovetail in this class, with a raised panel lid and contrasting woods. Other variations will also be discussed. Your instructor will provide a variety of beautiful woods from which you will choose for your in-class project. Species for each class will be subject to availability at the time of class. At the end of Day 2, each student will take home a box of their own. Time permitting, application of a finish will be discussed, but final finishing will be up to the student. Students wishing to learn about finishing in-depth should enroll in our Applied Finishing class, and bring their bare wood boxes to learn all about finishing and apply finish during that class.

Handplane Sharpening 101

Objective: By the end of this class, participants will be able to: 1. Understand the anatomy of a hand plane. 2. Demonstrate proper techniques for sharpening hand plane blades. 3. Identify different sharpening tools and their uses. 4. Maintain a sharp blade for effective woodworking. Students should bring a handplane of their choice that is in reasonable working condition.

Computer Numeric Control (CNC) technology offers woodworkers far greater accuracy and repeatability for many types of router and power carving projects. Professionals and hobbyists alike can create custom multiples of most anything faster and more accurately than any project fabricated manually. In this first class of our CNC series, students will learn how versatile CNC machines can be as Bob teaches students Vectric's software related to our in-store CNC units, and the variety of file types which may be imported, graphics compatibility, post processing cut paths, what materials are best to cut, and what shapes and styles may be fabricated. Materials may range from woods, plastics, MDF, soft non-ferrous metals, and solid surfacing materials. In this class, Bob will demonstrate a variety of techniques and projects which are useful to a range of woodworking specialties. Possible projects may include relief projects such as rosettes and other furniture or architectural embellishments, matching period pieces for restoration work, plaques, puzzles, labyrinths, intarsia pieces, boxes, RC craft pieces, bowls, home accessories such as Christmas tree ornaments and kitchen items, business branding and marketing collateral, and much more! NOTE: Students must please PRE-LOAD their laptop IN ADVANCE OF CLASS with either the demo or paid version of Vectric software (either the Desktop, Pro, or Aspire version).

This class will provide you with a great hands-on learning experience to understand each of the steps involved in creating a segmented pen. Topics including design, wood selection, accent applications, stock prep, glue-up, turning, and finishing all will be covered. Some finishing may be required at home. Students will take their segmented pen home, as well as their bushing set to make more of their own segmented pens outside of class!

Students will learn basic bandsaw safety and operation including rip cutting, cross cutting, re-sawing, and compound cutting. Step by step, we will walk you through essential personal safety as well as care and control of the saw, bandsaw setup, anatomy, blade selection and proper installation, calibration, re-saw drift, and how to get the most out of this valuable tool. During the morning and afternoon sessions, as we discuss these important bandsaw fundamentals, we will put new skills to use with cross cutting, rip cutting, re-sawing, and a bonus mock-up project involving pattern work! Pen Making Basics: Acrylic Pen

Power Tool Fundamentals: Table Saw

This is a basic instructional class directed at one of the most useful tools in the entire shop: the table saw. Students will learn basic table saw safety and operation in-depth. Step-by-step, we will walk you through table saw setup, essential personal safety, care and control of the saw, table saw anatomy, blade selection and proper installation, calibration, and how to safely get the most out of this valuable tool. We will be working specifically with the SawStop, and we'll learn the features specific to SawStop technology. However, the processes we cover apply to all table saws, and this class is for students who wish to learn about all table saws in general. Students will have hands-on experience in class as they apply the principles learned. This is not a project class, but rather a comprehensive master class on table saw essentials. Cabinet Construction Series: The Fundamentals

This 2-day class is a hands-on introduction to cabinet construction. Students learn as they build a small-scale Face Frame Style cabinet suitable for the kitchen, other home areas or shop storage. There are many construction methods in cabinet-making, this class will focus on Face Frame construction. In this fundamentals class, we will focus on table saw work for dado joinery of the carcass; and stile and rail construction of a flat panel door with European hinges. There is no pre-requisite.

In the Afternoon Session – we will apply your morning skills to turn Mini Bowls!! Turning Mini Bowls is a repeatable woodturning project that you can repeat and wood turn in your home workshop. This class is a must to accelerate your skills for turning bowls, boxes, platters, and various woodturning projects. Hand Tool Mastery Series I: The Essentials

We are excited to welcome you to our exclusive two-day intensive introduction to the world of hand tools! In this first class of the Hand Tools Mastery Series, students will focus heavily on sharpening skills, layout/marking concepts, and proper setup and usage of essential tools unique to precision hand tool construction. Students will learn about wood science specific to hand tool work, and will immerse in exercises and drills to increase muscle memory proficiency with chisels, hand saws, and hand planes. Throughout this class and the upcoming series, we will explore and practice the wide variety of hand tools which will be key in your ongoing woodworking success. Students are encouraged, but not required, to bring their own personal hand tools, marking and measuring tools, and sharpening stones and jig. If you do not have any of these tools, please do not purchase them in advance (without first talking with the instructor). We will have a wide variety of of types and sizes and brands available for use in class. Hand tool work is a time-honored discipline, and we look forward to launching your mastery of it as you learn how to build fine furniture by hand in this ongoing Hand Tool Mastery series!

3D Cutting Board

This is a great opportunity to make a 3D cutting board using Alex Snodgrass's method. Using only three different woods - Cherry, Maple, and Peruvian walnut - Barry will show each student how to make a stunning 3D end-grain cutting board. He will begin by teaching each student how to tune a bandsaw to make perfect cuts. Students will then progress through techniques required to build a cutting board: how to make dead-on straight cuts and accurate angled cuts on the bandsaw, and how to plane, sand, glue, and clamp the cutting board. Topics to be covered include: bandsaw myths debunked, bandsaw mechanics, correct blade tension, accurate angle cuts, gluing techniques, end-grain pattern alignment, food-safe finishes, and care and maintenance of cutting boards. By the end of the day, each student will have a fantastic 3D cutting board made with their own hands! This class is designed for woodworkers of all skill levels. Sharpening Mini Series: Kitchen & Pocket Knives

Saturday, October 25, 10 AM - 2 PM

Proper knife sharpening is a fine and skillful art that you can learn with mindful techniques and a few standard woodworking provisions: waterstones and a leather strop. Woodworkers typically reach for these things to sharpen chisels, plane irons, card scrapers, and the like. However, once you learn to flex these same provisions to sharpen your pocket and kitchen knives, you will dramatically improve your knife utility and culinary safety. You will also learn that each type of knife, each brand, and each shape is unique. You will learn to identify distinct sharpening nuances of many types of blades, differences between the most common waterstones, how and when to choose which one, and how to finely polish and skillfully dress your own knives, which you will bring to class. Also bring your sharpening stones, if you already own them, so that you can acclimate to your own set of tools. (Discounts will be offered to students who wish to purchase during class. However, you do not need to own sharpening stones! We will have stones to use in class.) Students will receive a leather strop to use in class and then take home. A variety of strop compounds will be used and discussed. NOTE: Bring knives that you're comfortable practicing on, because they will become scratched from the waterstones as you learn this technique! No serrated knives, please. All materials are included in the cost of tuition.

Woodworking I (Fine Furniture Series): Trestle Table

This is an energetic 3-day in-depth introduction to the world of woodworking! Students will learn fundamentals of building fine furniture with our resident custom furniture maker, Brian Hubel (www.brianhubel.com). Topics featured will be wood science, joinery, design, power and hand tools, sharpening, shop safety, and accuracy in construction. Each student will use these newly-acquired skills to build their very own side trestle table. The final finish will be up to the students. Students wishing to learn more about finishing are encouraged to enroll in our hands-on "Applied Finishing" class here in our Colorado Springs store. This class is a prerequisite for Woodworking II, III, and IV here in the Colorado Springs store. Class size for our Woodworking I, II, III, and IV classes is limited to a handful of students. We STRONGLY encourage you to confirm your spot as soon as possible, as classes fill up fast and are only scheduled a few times throughout the year! This is a 3-day in-depth follow-up to Woodworking I. Students will build on their skills learned in Woodworking I as they apply it to the basics of furniture-style case construction, frame and panel construction, and inset door construction of fine furniture. Other topics covered will include machine-cut dovetail joinery, additional power and hand tools, and ongoing shop safety. Precision design and construction techniques are also covered. Each student will use these newly acquired skills to build their very own beautiful solid wood wall cabinet. Class size is extremely limited, so please confirm your spot early!! Some explanations and pointers on finishing will be discussed in this class, but the final finish will be up to the student. Students wishing to learn more about finishing are encouraged to enroll in our informative "Finishing Basics" lecture class here in our Colorado Springs store. Small Box Series: Dovetail Box Using A Router And Dovetail Jig

This class will take you into the world of small box making with power tools. Small boxes can be very simple to extremely elegant, from a simple recipe caddy to an intricate heirloom treasury. Once you learn the fundamental techniques and how to use the dovetail jig, you can make just about any style in any size for any purpose which your dovetail jig accommodates. Students will focus on the half-blind dovetail in this class, with a raised panel lid and contrasting woods. Other variations will also be discussed. Your instructor will provide a variety of beautiful woods from which you will choose for your in-class project. Species for each class will be subject to availability at the time of class. At the end of Day 2, each student will take home a box of their own. Time permitting, application of a finish will be discussed, but final finishing will be up to the student. Students wishing to learn about finishing in-depth should enroll in our Applied Finishing class, and bring their bare wood boxes to learn all about finishing and apply finish during that class.

Each student will use these newly-acquired skills to build their very own side trestle table. The final finish will be up to the students. Using only three different woods - maple, cherry, and Peruvian walnut - Barry will show each student how to make a stunning 3D end-grain cutting board. He will begin by teaching each student how to tune a bandsaw to make perfect cuts. Students will then progress through techniques required to build a cutting board: how to make dead-on straight cuts and accurate angled cuts on the bandsaw, and how to plane, sand, glue, and clamp the cutting board. Topics to be covered include: bandsaw myths debunked, bandsaw mechanics, correct blade tension, accurate angle cuts, gluing techniques, end-grain pattern alignment, food-safe finishes, and care and maintenance of cutting boards. By the end of the day, each student will have a fantastic 3D cutting board made with their own hands! This class is designed for woodworkers of all skill levels. This is a 4-day comprehensive fine furniture building continuation of Woodworking I and II. The primary focus of this advanced class is compound cutting on the bandsaw and and shaping with a new set of skills and tools not previously introduced. Other topics covered will include floating table top design techniques and integrated apron construction, structure and functionality, and precision jig work for exposed dowel joinery. Developing upon the skills and techniques learned in Woodworking I and II, students will build a beautiful high-end console, entry, or hall table. Leg and apron wood selection is up to the instructor, and is subject to wood availability at the time of the class. Students will be asked to choose and purchase wood for their table top and lower shelf. Consultation with the instructor is required no later than one week prior to class, and student's wood choice must be pre-approved and provided to the instructor no later than one week prior to class. NOTE: Please do NOT wait until the last minute for this! If your wood selection does not work with the project, you will need to identify, purchase, and provide an appropriate alternate to the instructor no later than one week prior to class. At the end of class, students will have completed their table to take home. The final finish will be up to the student. Power Tool Fundamentals: Table Saw

This is a basic instructional class directed at one of the most useful tools in the entire shop: the table saw. Students will learn basic table saw safety and operation in-depth. Step-by-step, we will walk you through table saw setup, essential personal safety, care and control of the saw, table saw anatomy, blade selection and proper installation, calibration, and how to safely get the most out of this valuable tool. We will be working specifically with the SawStop, and we'll learn the features specific to SawStop technology. However, the processes we cover apply to all table saws, and this class is for students who wish to learn about all table saws in general. Students will have hands-on experience in class as they apply the principles learned. This is not a project class, but rather a comprehensive master class on table saw essentials. These are small classes! Confirm your enrollment as soon as possible to ensure your spot in class. All Materials Are Included In The Cost Of Tuition.

Wood Selection And Stock Preparation

Saturday, May 2, 10 AM - 4 PM

Wood selection, layout, and stock preparation is key to any successful woodworking project. We will break it down for you in this interactive class. Students will have hands-on practical experience choosing the proper wood, allowing for expansion and contraction, calculating board footage, considering grain direction, knots, and other considerations, and accounting for fundamental characteristics of both lumber and man-made materials such as MDF and plywood. Using a combination of hand and power tools, students will take a board from its rough form to material that is straight, flat, square, and ready for use. Whether you have hand tools or power tools in your shop, we will learn the techniques to prep stock both ways. Students will be exposed to a wide variety of tools and machinery, to include the table saw, bandsaw, planer, jointer, drum sander, and hand planes, and marking tools. Tuition includes all materials. This class is open to any and all students and skill levels. It is a recommended (but not required) companion to many of our other classes, including our fine furniture series (Woodworking I, II, III, and IV), all Small Project Series classes (Charcuterie, box-making, etc.), and any class or project involving solid stock.
