This class will expand upon the traditional tools and cutting skills taught in the Introduction to the Lathe and Spindle Turning Class. We will briefly review the use of the spindle gouge/roughing gouge/parting tool and then focus on the use of the skew. We will make the following cuts with a skew: “V”, rolling a bead, planning, and the pommel (square to round used in many spindles). We will use some of these cuts to produce a (small) rolling pin. The bulk of the class is a hands-on experience. Intro to the Lathe and Spindle Turning class or Instructor Permission is required.

David will take you from two pieces of wood and instruct you how to create a hand-turned ornament. The lid will be a mortise and tenon fit to the hollow body. The bottom of the ornament will be a finial. The student will learn basic turning skills, and safety. The students will be afforded the opportunity to utilize both traditional tools as well as Easy Wood Carbide tools. In addition to the lathe, the bandsaw and drill press will be utilized to cut and drill the wood prior to the turning.
