Leveling a Drill Press Table

How to Level a Drill Press Table for Accurate Woodworking

Accuracy matters in every phase of your woodworking projects, especially when you're drilling holes. Whether you're working with a benchtop drill press or a full-size floor model, one key factor often gets overlooked: making sure the table is square to the chuck. If it's off, even by a little, holes can drift or exit at the wrong angle—throwing off your entire build.

Quick Jig Setup for Better Results on Any Drill Press

Fortunately, you don’t need complex tools or gauges to accurately level your drill press table. All it takes is a simple jig made from a square stick and two 16-penny nails. The stick should be about 3/4" thick and just long enough to reach from your drill press chuck to the edge of the table. Drill holes in both ends—slightly smaller than the nails—and tap one nail in fully, with the other just shy of poking through.

Mount the stick in your chuck and rotate it slowly. If the nail heads touch the table evenly all the way around, your drill press table is square. If not, raise or adjust the table until you get consistent contact. It's fast, accurate and works on virtually all drill presses.

This method ensures better alignment for mortising, doweling or any precision drilling. The same trick can be used after maintenance or moving your machine to make sure everything stays dialed in.
